[comp.sys.mac.misc] Fonts on a file server?

mosemann@sardion.unl.edu (Russell Mosemann) (03/14/91)

A friend of mine is interested in placing Adobe fonts for his
LaserWriter printers on a file server so that everyone would have access
to them. (They only have 2 LaserWriters on a self-contained LocalTalk
network and they have purchased a license for each of these printers.)
I know that people usually have to place these fonts in their system
folder, but the users bring their own floppies to start up the Macs and
there is not enough room for the system folder the way it is.
There supposedly exists something called "Set Path" or a variation
which automatically opens the font file(s) so that a resource search
will find the fonts. (I could be dreaming.) Does anyone use this or
have any more information about such a utility? Thanks.

This is a very simple operation, but there is a copyright violation question.
Do you have a site license for the fonts?
Procedure:
Use suitcase or Master juggler
Put fonts and SCREEN FONT SUITCASES into same folder (no subfolders)
PUBLISH that folder (tops, et al) or make it a READ ONLY folder
(Make sure suitcase or juggler is on each computer (sorry)

Each computer then accesses the font suitcase . .

Suitcase (a commercial product) lets you do this quite nicely. You
can set it up to automatically access the fonts each time. I do this
and only have a bare-bones set of fonts in my System Folder. I use
ATM and the outline and 12/12 pt bitmaps of about 40 -50 fonts are
on a server I access.

PostScript fonts are licensed per *printer*. The fonts are made available
to a group with access to an NTX printer which has the fonts on an
attached hard disk. As long as printing goes to that printer it's
legit.

One problem with doing this is that, should the network server not be
available at startup Suitcase will no longer remember to mount the fonts
on the server. You'd have to manually mount them again.

We used to do this in one of our labs. I remember solving the problem by
locking some of the resources in the SuitCase program.
