[comp.sys.mac.misc] installing fonts/Da's directly into applications

cohen@tramp.Colorado.EDU (Matthew Cohen) (03/09/91)

	A question:

I am operating a Mac lab, in which each of the students have their
own system disk. Some of them are wanting to have different fonts,
and so I have to install the fonts on each system disk for each person.
I recently remembered how to install DA's directly into an app., so
I put the Wordfinder thesaurus into Mircosoft Word and Macwrite II,
but now I'm wondering if it is possible to but _fonts_ directly into
an application? If so, do the fonts still take up space in the
system file, and cause multiple system errors? If they don't take
up space, that would be great, because then I could put more than the
8 fonts that the 800K system disk allows!

Any suggestions, insigns, help would be appreciated.

Thanx Much in advance,
Matt Cohen

Matthew--Sure you can put fonts right into an application. Do it
the same way you did DA's, i.e., hold option as you click the open button.
But I don't know what you mean about saving space. Those fonts won't have t
to be on the system disk, but the same amount of space will be taken up on
the disk holding the application. Is that what you were hoping?
The fonts won't lead to any system errors, but be sure the only sizes of
each font are installed onto the application, not the system. The MacOS
will use, e.g., the Courier installed in the system before it will look
to the application. If you've got 12 pt. Courier installed in the system,
and 12 and 24 point in, say, MSWord, the system will never find the 24
point. I hope this has been helpful. System 7 will make all this totally un
unnecessary. No more font/DA mover!
