[comp.sys.mac.misc] Hard Disk Crash

dubach1@husc9.harvard.edu (joev dubach) (03/27/91)

I just got a Mac IIsi, and have been busy installing applications on
the 80mb apple hard disk. I'm running system 6.0.7 with the standard
release package. The computer has bombed a lot, sometimes randomly,
sometimes because of incompatible software (like StudioSession);
usually these errors are things like Coprocessor Not Installed or
Address Error. Recently, after one of these bombs, I restarted the
computer and found that about 60% of the file/folders in my main
directory had vanished. On closer inspection, I discovered that every
file/folder alphabetically after "Games" had disappeared. I used
Norton Utilities' Disk Doctor, and it said it had fixed some problems
with the Catalog Tree, but that there were some things it couldn't
fix. When I tried the Disk Editor, all of my files were visible, with
the hierarchy and everything; nothing had been corrupted. (Also, in
my main directory, the Finder said there was xxxK in disk, where xxx
was the amount taken up by everything, not just the things I could
see.) I could look at these files and even recover them to a
floppy with a friend's SUM Disk Clinic. Odlly, Norton's Fast Find
could "see" the missing files as well, while Apple's Find File could
not. The weird thing is that the hard disk boots fine, even though I
_can't_ see the system folder. All the inits are there, too. I can
even run some applications that I had installed in On Cue's menu, even
though I can't see them through the Finder.
Has anyone else had this kind of a disk crash? If so, how did
you fix it? It seems that if Norton knows where everything should be
in the hierarchy, there should be an application that can find and
restore this information to the Finder's clutches. Post or e-mail me
if you have any ideas.

Addendum: I posted this on comp.sys.mac, and got back a reply which
suggested that the invisible bits might have been turned on, but I
checked and that was not the case. I've also tried rebuilding the
desktop to no avail. Also, if it means anything to you, Norton
reports unfixable problems with fLinks and bLinks.
