[comp.sys.mac.misc] Backround/Spool Printing Questions

jnsims01@ulkyvx.bitnet (03/29/91)

Several people have asked about MultiSpool recently, to wit:

> I have recently downloaded multispool and can not get it to work.

> Sounds like the problem I had with MultiSpool....Once
> you do this, Multispool should begin to work (and Boy, does it work well).

I have tried MultiSpool with both and Imagewriter and an HP Deskwriter, both
with and without Apple's Print Manager in the System Folder, and have never
been able to get it work. My questions, however, are more general. If some
knowledgeable soul will e-mail answers to me, I will summarize for the net
because its clear that a number of us are working in the dark.

1) According to the manuals, background printing using Apple's Print Manager
works only under MultiFinder and will not work with Imagewriters. OK, I'll buy
that. What *does* it work with? Lasers only? Only Appletalk connected devices?
Will it work with a serially connected Deskwriter, and if not, why not?
(Possibly relevant info: I've never seen the radio button for 'background
printing enabled' in the Chooser which my manual says should be there...)

2) MultiSpool is *reputed* to provide background printing for most (?) printers
under MultiFinder. Does it work with all (most) printers? Serial as well as
AppleTalk connected? Even if the driver loads (appears in 'march of the icons'
and in the Apple Menu), I get print error -43 dialog whenever I invoke it from
any program.

Background printing is something I'd prefer not to have to live without. Any
advice or assitance you can offer will be appreciated and shared with others.
If you'd prefer to connect via voice, call the number below and I'll call you
back on my (well, UofL's) nickle. Thanks on everybody's behalf.
