[comp.sys.mac.misc] Word 4.0 Fast Save Problems

unx20397@unx2.ucc.okstate.edu (Sean Brannon) (04/03/91)

I have a co-worker with a severe problem. He opened up a 250k file and
deleted all but a small amount, to save having to change the formatting
for a new document. He then decided he didn't want to do this and quit
word. Now here is where it gets fuzzy. When Word asked if he wanted to
save changes, he says he told it NO. But in actuallity it seems he said
YES, and the file was overwritten. Paring it down from 250k to 2k.
Major foul up on his part because he now has lost several hours of work
(no backup). Or has he?
Word has an option called 'Fast Save' and this feature appends changes
to the end of the file, not really completely overwritting your file
until certain conditions are met. So what I now have is a 250k file
that Word only looks at the last 2k of. I've gone in and looked at the
file with a file editor, and yep, the data is there. But I can't get
Word to recover the file, or rather look at ALL the data that is in the
file. Does anyone out there have any info on how Word formats it's file
header? All I've successfully found is the character count and what I
think is the begging of file marker. And, of course, Microsoft has been
oh so helpful.

Any help will be MUCH appreciated!
