[comp.sys.mac.misc] LC and System 7.0

scott@en.ecn.purdue.edu (Scott Kell) (04/03/91)

Hi,
This question has probably been asked before, but I don't follow this
newsgroup. I'm thinking about buying an LC. I'm too poor for an IIsi,
and for my purposes (word processing, some small programs) a IIsi would
go to waste. My concern is, will the LC be able to run System 7.0?
I know it won't have the virtual memory capabilities, since the LC doesn't
have an MMU, but it seems like you should still be able to multitask
without one. But if the LC can't run System 7.0, it seems to me that all
the LCs sold now will become orphaned in a couple of years. Incidentally,
I have heard MANY conflicting stories about this issue. Does anyone have
the real story on this?
Thanks in advance,
Scott Kell

Yes, all Macs will be able to run System 7.0. Although, I'm not sure
about the 128K Mac and the Mac 512K, so maybe I shouldn't say all.

But if do want something to think about, I don't imagine System 8.0
will run that well on an LC. Isn't Apple planning a late 92 release?

Fer crying out loud, people, System 7 IS NOT EQUAL TO virtual memory!

The answer to a memory crunch is to buy more RAM... it's cheap.
System 7 addresses multitasking, publish/subscribe paradigm,
significant user interface goodies, built-in file share, and lots
more. ALL of that runs without a PMMU.

Virtual memory is a boondoggle devised in the days of Sculley's
expensive RAM blooper. It'll be nice to have it there as an occasional
stretch-the-envelope thing, but if you wind up using it every day, BUY
MORE RAM.

You mean 2092, don't you? :-)

No, 128 and 512K Macs cannot run System 7. Neither can the 1M Mac Plus
or SE unless they are upgraded. The minimum requirements to run System 7
are 2M of RAM and a hard disk.

System 7.0 can run on any Macintosh except the original Macintosh and the
Macintosh 512; those early models do not have recent enough ROMs. All
later models, including the Plus, the SE, the Classic, and the LC, can run
System 7.0.

However, System 7.0 does require 2 Meg of RAM and a hard disk, and of
course virtual memory will not be available on machines that do not have a
PMMU.
