[comp.sys.mac.misc] telnet and GIF files

kingson@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu (Kingson Gunawan) (04/15/91)

I am having problems with telnet 2.3 when I try to download a GIF file. For some reasons the resulting file is not recognized by either Giffer or GIFconverter.
I did use binary transfer and MacBinary is enabled. What is stange about it, is that I tried to use zmodem with zterm 085 and the file was successfully transfereed without any of the above problems. What is going on?

Sounds like the file type and creator are getting screwed up by telnet.
Zterm is VERY good at recognizing file type and creator and setting them
accordingly, except for the annoying habit of dowloading binhex files as
ZBIN binary instead of text. Get a copy of the DA file master or anything
else that lets you set types and creators and that should help you fix your
problem....

Make sure you transmit the file with MacBinary OFF (just in case), and with
NO alteration of the file (such as "strip control characters","LF->CR", etc.)

ZTerm may recognize the file to be a GIF file and set its file type. The latest
versions of GIFConverter have "look inside files" buttons in the open box.
These tell GIFConverter to deduce the file type from the contents of the file
rather than from the finder information, which is not transmitted with GIFs.

Try it without having MacBinary enabled. Turn it off under the file menu
and after you send your FTP command, set the mode to binary. This will
make a binary transfer but not a MacBinary transfer. This works without
a hitch for me.

Good Luck,
Joe
