[comp.sys.mac.misc] WHAT CAUSES "BAD CATALOG EXTENT RECORDS"?

clark@randvax.UUCP (John Clark) (04/16/91)

On several hard disks of my acquaintance (both Apple and 3rd party),
SUM II (in Quick Fix/Check Volume mode) reports:
"bad catalog extent record" (often several), and/or
    "allocation map is invalid", and
    "directory is bad".
The disks seem to be working OK, although I have experienced some
inexplicable crashes, lockups, and "lost" files from time to time.
Reinitializing an affected disk makes SUM II happy, but seems a rather
drastic fix.

In general, what causes these apparent disk errors that SUM II finds, and
what do they mean? Do they presage something more serious?

All help gratefully accepted.

Thanks!
