[comp.sys.mac.misc] A question about sounds....

Greetings from the sunny city of Pittsburgh. I am a poor under-
payed information science graduate student here at Pitt, who is
looking for some help with a program I am writing that deals with
sound.
I have built a SID (very nice, by the way) and am now using it to
examine the incoming sounds for particular noises. I would like to
analyze the output of the SID not only by amplitude, but by frequency
as well. As far as I understand, the SID (or a macrecorder, they're
pretty much the same thing) gives me voltages ranging from -128 to 127.
These correspond to the mixture of frequencies and amplitudes and things
that are occurring at that moment.
Is there any easy way to pull some of the frequencies out? I'm doing
this on the fly, not in a batch operation, so time is a concern. Does
anyone out there have any good ideas? Any books I should look at? I have
skimmed some texts on digital processing, looking for FFT info, but they
are pretty vague.
I would greatly appreciate some help. I can supply more information,
if needed. (Would someone at Farralon be good to talk to?).

Thanks very much for any help you can give.
