Someone wrote (I forgot who, because I didn't save the article) that they
would like to see software developers start a try-before-you buy program.

Many mail order houses do this -- money back guarantees (usu. 30 days).  I'm
not sure how this works wrt software, but if it works they way the ads make
it seem to work, this is they way to try out a game, and if you're addicted,
you can keep it.  If it's lame, you send it back.  Your money is returned.
The MO house may keep a restocking fee, but 5 or 10 bucks is worth it to 
kick the tires of a new game for a few weeks (at least to me...)
