[comp.sys.mac.misc] To Those With New Macs

lingerke@mentor.cc.purdue.edu (Ken Linger) (04/12/91)

Here's my question: When I bought my Mac, the registration card said I could
check off one of several items I could receive. One was a T-Shirt,
one was a mouse pad, one was some Mac magazines. Well, I turned it in
last October, and haven't received anything (the mouse pad). Has any-
	one else had this problem?

Its not like its a big deal, I've already got a mouse pad, but come on! I
bought an Apple IIgs about four years ago and the same happened. I was
supposed to receive some issues of A+ Magazine and they never came.

I can live without the magazines or T-shirt or mouse pad, but if they are going
to offer it, I would hope that they have them to give. I'm sure that
there are others who feel the same way.

This topic came up a month or two ago -- at the time, a number of people said
they did not receive their 'free gift'. I got a IIsi in Nov, I have not gotten
my mouse pad yet either. I remember someone mentioning that he finally got
his gift after waiting almost a year! So perhaps it will eventually come, but
I'm not holding my breath....

I have owned two macs, and never received the 'gifts' (mouse pad, or t-shirt, or
whatever) that I was supposed to get with either of them. The first was
purchased over 3 years ago, and the second over a year ago. I've given up hope.
I guess either they lied or they mis-printed the address on the registration
card or something.

I guess I got lucky. When I purchased my SE/30 in October '89 I sent in
the card asking for a free issue of MacWorld. I ended up getting 4 or 5
issues free starting in January or February '90 (along with the
subscription offers).

I bought a IIcx last May and also requested a mouse pad. Several months
later it arrived. BTW, it is one of those plastic (teflon?) pads, not
the soft kind. Maybe they're just backed up due to the popularity of the
new macs?

I opted for the 6 issues of MacWorld or MacUser or whatever it was.
This was in November. My free subscription is almost up, as I have
received 4 or 5 issues so far.

(I guess I won't renew it, if it's not got enough in it for me even
to remember the name of the magazine :-)

I got a Classic a ouple of months ago, and promptly asked for the
half year subscription of MacWorld. I haven't received it yet....

I am actually getting quite annoyed with Apple. If I hadn't had my mind set on
a Macintosh, Apple would have cetainly lost my purchase. (I actually know
people that have bought PC's instead of Apples because Apple just doesn't care
about its costumers.) What really frustrated me was that I had a two-half month
wait for a Classic. That would have been OK,if I was told right from the begining
that I was going to have to wAit that long, but my dealer told me it would
be in the next shipment several times, and I ended up waiting for it
a lot longer than I expected. TRhe question is - the the dealer not know what
was going on - or was Apple giving them the run around too. I suspect the
latter. To top it off, both my keyboard and mouse have had to be replaced,
because Apple shipped faulty ones with my machine.

Am I having bad luck with Apple, or is everybody had similar problems?

You guys are clearly newcomers. I bit twice, back in '85. I bought
two Macs about six months apart. Each time I sent in my card for a
free copy of MacWorld and didn't receive it. It's an Apple custom,
and when you finally learn that they don't make good on promises,
you're ready to wait an extra year for System 7.0! It's called
"operant conditioning", I believe.

Well, I got my free gift. I got a new SE/30 last Fall (for work) and asked
for the mouse pad. I received it a month or so later. I bought an
LC (for home) a couple of months ago, and I am currently receiving my copies of
MacWorld, so I guess it does work, at least sometimes.

My sympathy to all who haven't gotten their fair share. :-(

Interesting thread. When my dad bought his mac, we received floppy boxes
(two, holding ten floppies each) within the usual six to eight weeks.

Yow! So *that's* why I got a mousepad in the mail a month ago! I got a
IIcx a *year* ago, and must've checked the mousepad box for my free gift.
(It's an OK mousepad, with "Apple" in big Apple-font. Too bad the Apple
mouse on top of it is flaking out, but that's another story...)

Hang in there, you might get your gift sometime next year :-).

I purchased a new IIsi near the end of January and my T-shirt that I selected
for my "free" gift did come about a week ago. So they do actually ship these
token gifts.

When I purchased my SE/30 several years back I got my free gift over what
seemed to be a slightly longer period as I recall.

ESR@SLACVM.SLAC.STANFORD.EDU (Ed Russell) (04/15/91)

We selected a mouse pad too. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm not sure it
matters that much. The mouse is such a piece of crap I'm not sure any
kind of mouse pad would help.

I purchased a IIsi last December and ordered the 6 free issues of MacWorld.
It took a few months to get the subscription started, but I have received
the April and May issues.

I opted for a (or two) free issue of some magazine (MacWorld I think) which I
think I got. Iwas receiveing it at the time, but I think I was credited with
an extra issue or two. I already had a mouse pad, and the T-shirt wasn't
offerred :-(.

Reading all of these complaints about not getting free gifts for sending
in the ergistration card reminded me about a passage in Guy Kawasaki's
book "The Macintosh Way". Basically Apple uses registration cards as a way
to audit sales in a region (he explains this is the most relaible way
to credit sales people--all of the details I can't remember). This
incentive may just be a smokes screen to get this method to work.

Comments from Apple?

When this thread started it got me thinking that I hadn't received the
mouse pad I'd requested back in November. Maybe it's just a coincidence
but no sooner did I begin to wonder if I'd ever get it then there it
is!

It is a _very_ nice mouse pad.

I have always gotten my free gift (used to be a MacWorld mouse pad, this time
it is an Apple mouse pad, teflon coated.)

If it's any consolation, with some companies, I actually got
product upgrade notices and tip sheets when I turned in my registration
(and with Alladin/StuffIt, they even sent me an upgrade disk once
without me asking for it and without charging me for it!)
I don't remember how I got started with Central Point Software, but
I must say, their tech support people are nice about answering letters.

(Graduate student and unconnected with Alladin nor CPS other than being
a more or less satisfied customer...)

The folks a T/Maker (WriteNow) and <Minds gone blank> (Think C) have
been really great about keeping me up to date on updates of new versions
of the software.

But I do agree about the questions about marketing info though. One
appliance I bought had "registration" card with the marketing questions
but also had a statement that said it was not required for registering
the product.

P.S. If you like receiving Pre-Approved Credit Card offers, check of
the really high salary boxes! ;^)
