[comp.sys.mac.misc] Restart on an SI

arends@Yosemite.metaphor.com (Dale M Arends) (04/23/91)

Folks, my wife asked me a question that I couldn't answer and wasn't
able to find in the manuals so I turn to thee for help.

She has an SI and managed to get the system to hang. Being an old
MSDOS person, she tried CTRL-ALT-DEL which, of course, didn't work. At
that point she turned to me to ask what WOULD work (besides the power
switch) and I didn't know (embarassing :-)).

On my CX, I merely hit the programmer's switch. What do I, or rather,
what does she do on the SI to restart it after a system hang?

Rather than use up net bandwidth, please email the info to me at the address
below.

I thank you...

Dale

Well, I got an answer to the question of restart on an SI after a crash.
It seems that the magic combination is to press, simultaneously,
the COMMAND-CONTROL-POWER ON keys.

Sheeeesh! A programmer's switch would have been more intuitive, IMHO.
I wonder if this will work in all instances...probably not, not if the
system is reeeally hosed.

Anyway, thanks to all those who sent me the answer.

I've heard the reset sequence for the IIsi referred to as

                      "Control-Flower-Power"

:-)

And, as far as I know it will work in all the situations that a "hard" reset
switch does on, say, a vanilla Mac II. However, there are times when the
reset switch will not work. I once crashed a vintage II in such a manner
as to render the actual POWER button on the back of the machine inoperative.
I had to physically unplug the silly thing....
