[comp.sys.mac.misc] Stupid question on EtherTalk installation

tony@scotty.dccs.upenn.edu (Anthony Olejnik) (04/24/91)

I have a Mac IIci with sys 6.0.7 installed.
I'm trying to install EtherTalk (v2.0.1).

The EtherTalk installer disk has a minimal system 6.0.3 on it.
The IIci will not boot with the minimal system 6.0.3 on it.

I tried to replace the 'system' and 'finder' files (on the
EtherTalk installation disk) with the 'system' and 'finder'
files from sys 6.0.7. However, I ran out of room.

I also tried using the 'system' and 'finder' files from 6.0.5,
Again, I ran out of room.

Apparently the 'system' and 'finder' files for 6.0.3 are smaller
than the files on 6.0.5/6.0.7. Because of this, they are able to
fit on the EtherTalk installer disk.

So, how do you install EtherTalk on a Mac IIci?
Am I going about this incorrectly?

Any help would be *GREATLY* appreciated.

Thanks.

It sounds like you made a mistake. Simply dragging a new copy of the System
file onto the old disk will delete necessary EtherTalk resources that are
installed in that System which the installer uses to put EtherTalk resources
in other Systems (whew). To update a System ALWAYS use the Installer on the
System Tools disk unless you *really* know what you are doing.

So, if the original 6.0.3 System file is still intact, just upgrade it to a
'Minimum IIci System' using the Installer from 6.0.5 or 6.0.7. This will
maintain the integrity of the EtherTalk resources in the System.

Another solution is to download the file '201i-ethertalk-install.hqx' file
from the /pub/dts/sw.license directory on apple.com. Since this file is a
disk image, you will also need to download 'diskcopy-4-1.hqx' to decode it
after you de-binhex both of them.

Cheers,

Alan

The Mac IIci should come with a "Network Products Installer" disk.
Startup with it, and install Ethertalk. When it asks for the ethertalk
disk, give it your 6.0.3 ethertalk disk.
