[comp.sys.mac.misc] Boomerang vs Directory Assistance

drewster@orion.oac.uci.edu (Andrew T. Laurence) (04/26/91)

Which is better? Why?

I have the feeling this was covered before, so please just email back to save
on bandwidth. A summary of previous discussions, or your very own IMHO, I
welcome all responses. I'll summarize to the net in a few days.

Thanks,
Andrew Laurence

I prefer Boomerang, because it solves the most serious lack
(to me) of the "getfile" and "putfile" dialog boxes -- no simple
way to access various important files or folders. It does a gorgeous
job, too -- it's the singe most useful utility I have.

Norton is working on making Directory Assistance compatible with
Boomerang (according to a tech. support person I spoke to at Norton).

There is a RUMOR that renaming Dir. Asst. so it loads before
Boomerang solves the problem. I have no idea if it's true!

Details:
Directory Assistance is an init included with Norton Utilities.
It modfies the "SFGetFile" dialog box to view files by date,
and much other similar useful-sounding stuff. Take this with
a grain of salt, as I've not used it!

Boomerang is a cdev included with "NOW Utilities" (or download
Boomerang 2.0 from sumex-aim and send in your shareware fee!).
It modifies "SFGetFile" and "SFPutFile" to add menus of
recently-accessed or user-"installed" files and folders.
It also allows you to instantly open files by adding a sub-menu
of files to the Open... command. It does other useful things
as well, including first-rate "rebound", searching for files,
creating new folders, etc. Boomerang is an amazingly useful
utility.
