[comp.sys.mac.misc] Help with Send PS

jww502@anu.oz.au ("John W White") (04/28/91)

I've just tried to send a PostScript file to the LaserWriter and Send PS says "Yup sure, that downloaded fine" (or words tothat effect :-)) But nothing came out ! The LaserWriter did, however, show up it's little orange light (which I think means a postscript error ??). I created the file holding down f when printing from MacDraw II v1.1 . What can I say but help !

Thanks

Dave.

two ideas:
	1. send another mac graphic (macdraw) from the application
to the printer first; the cmd-f file doesn't include the
laserprep file and you need that downloaded before sending
	   a cmd-f file.

	2. sometimes you need to issue the PS SHOWPAGE command at the
end of the download; SendPS has this as an option under one
of it 2 or 3 menus.

I had this problem a while back, and here is the cause (as I understand it)
and the solution that has always worked for me.

There are two kinds of Postscript files you can create with your Mac, ones with
LaserPrep (k) and ones without (f). See the file on Generating Postscript
files, on sumex, for details.

A Laserwriter, once it has been initialized with a certain version of LaserPrep
(i.e., a document with a certain version of LaserPrep is printed), will work
only with Postscript files which were created to work with the same version of
LaserPrep as in the printer (whether or not the Postscript file has LaserPrep
prepended).

Thus, the Laserwriter probably has a different version of LaserPrep in memory
than is on the Mac which created your Postscript file.

The foolproof way to do it (and the way I usually do it) is to ALWAYS include
LaserPrep in your Postscript file, and to ALWAYS reboot the Laserwriter before
printing (either by cycling the power, or better, by using SendPS's menu
command).
