It is not the -me package, it is nroff's rediculous assumption that if you don't give a terminal you are on a terminet 300 terminal. Why Berkeley people ever put this in, I don't know. The least they could have done would have been to explicitly, loudly tell you about the col program to filter your output through. This will get rid of those escape sequences, which are for a terminal you probably don't have.
