When I select the "Save as..." command in MS-WORD, the "Fast Save" option is checked. I can't seem to turn this option off in a permanent way. When I click on the box, yes, the X in the box disappears...but next time I go back to "Save as", the stupid thing is set to do Fast Save again! It would be nice to turn Fast Save off and make it a *default*. When I try selecting "File Format..." in the "Save As..." dialog, there is indeed a "Default format for file" checkbox, but it is *deactivated* whenever I have selected "Normal" file format. So, it's impossible to click in the "Default format for file" checkbox. I also looked in the command "Preferences...". there's nothing there that can help either. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Greg Sandell -- Greg Sandell sandell@ils.nwu.edu

What you need to do is to go to the "Commands..." item in the Edit menu. Go to the item on the list called "Fast Save Enabled." Add this item to a menu and then make sure there is not a check mark on the menu item. When "Fast Save Enabled" is checked you get a fast save, when it's not checked you get a complete save. -- Dana E. So, it's impossible to click in >the "Default format for file" checkbox. You're looking in the wrong place. Assuming you have full menus turned on, go into "Commands..." and then type an "F". That takes you to "Fast Save Enabled". Now, you can either click on "Do", which toggles the value of that command, or do what I did: click on "Add" to put "Fast Save Enabled" into the Edit menu. That way, you can see the state of that option -- a checkmark means it's enabled, no checkmark means it's disabled. Word 4 will let you do just about anything -- once you figure it out. If you haven't played with the "Commands..." subsystem you're missing a lot of things. -- Chuq Von Rospach >=< chuq@apple.com >=< GEnie: CHUQ >=< AppleLink: CHUQ SFWA Nebula Awards Reports Editor =+= Editor, OtherRealms Book Reviewer, Amazing Stories ---@--- #include <standard/disclaimer.h> Recommended: ORION IN THE DYING TIME Ben Bova (Tor, Aug, ***-); SACRED VISIONS Greeley&Cassutt (Tor, Aug, ****+); MEN AT WORK George Will (****); XENOCIDE Orson Scott Card (August, ****)

Close, but no cigar -- it's the next one down. From the manual, p.312: "To have Word perform a full, normal save each time you choose the Save command, you can turn off the Fast Save Enabled option, available through the Commands command. With this option off, the Fast Save option in the Save As dialog box remains dimmed. To turn the Fast Save Enabled option on and off, select Fast Save Enabled from the list in the Commands dialog box, and then click the Do button." The reason Fast Save is re-turned-on <there's probably a word for that :)> is because you have made more than a specific number of changes to the document. The way around this is to go to Commands, & choose "Fast Save" which makes it a permanent menu choice. Then you can turn it on or off at your leisure. -=Alan -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Who, me? Nope, I didn't say that. However: I've noticed that the "fast save" format is invoked in the file-type when your document has tables embedded in it--or at least when you try to open a document with tables with Nisus 3.04. I use Nisus a lot and discovered this to my dismay when I tried to open a client's document that contained budget tables and was totally unable to do so until I opened it with Word 4.0, changed the table back to tabs, and then saved it again. The error dialogue I got from Nisus told me something to the effect that Nisus was unable to open Word documents in fast-save format.
