I think the Mac needs some stuff added to the beginning of a GIF file
before you can view it. I'm not sure because I don't own a Mac, but
I've seen programs that strip this stuff off so you can view Mac-viewable
GIFs on other systems. I've crossposted to comp.sys.mac.misc in the
hope that someone there can give an authoritative answer: What's the
correct, full procedure for transferring GIF files from a uuencoded
file to a format viewable on the Mac?

Your problem with view GIFs may be very simple. Have you tried changing the
type and creater? You can use Disktools 3, or MacTools and probably quite a
few other utilities. Change them to GIFf GIFf. That "should" solve it. Also,
may I suggest changing to GIFConverter, a much more useful program, and the
current version has an option that will actually do this for you (version 2.2d6
). Best of luck!

I don't think there is anything stripped off for Mac GIFs. I've ported
GIFs from Suns, IBMs, Amigas, and Unix, and never had a problem.
My guess is that the porper format for GIFs is exactly the same regardless
of the computer it's done on (as it should be).

Still, it does sound like there are problems in the file itself.
The GIF programs, as far as I've seen, will open any file you give it,
and only give error messages over the data itself. A thought -
were any characters stripped off in the transmission? CR's changed
into LF's? There shouldn't be any problem if the GIF is uuencoded,
but one never knows. Heck, it might just be a bad transfer.

Oh, GIFconvertor 2.2.6, the replacement for 2.2b6, is now out.

All normal disclaimers apply, as well as some abnormal ones.

I have a question or two i this regard:

1: How does one uudecode a GIF?

2: Is there a uudecode utility for the Mac, so I can decode a file I've
   already downloaded?

Hi there,

Look for "UUTOOLS" in sumex-aim.stanford.edu. That's what you need.

Good luck,
