I'm told the solution to all my woes is to spend another $42 (the best price I can find, so far) for Adobe Type Reunion, which, to my way of thinking, should be part of ATM in the first place! So, the question is this: does there exist anywhere a shareware INIT that does the same thing as Adobe Type Reunion? I almost think I could write such a thing myself--I mean all you have to do is trap GetResourceMenu (I think that's the one!) with an argument of 'FONT' and build a hierarchical menu based on known names of the Adobe Fonts! How hard can that be? Anyone done it already? "Never let work interfere with your reasons for working." Kim Helliwell

I just purchased Adobe's Type Manager and a package of fonts, and was mildly dismayed that my font menus have become so unruly! That is, filled with all the roman, bold, italic, and bold italic fonts. If you have Font Harmony, which comes with Suitcase II, you can "merge" the font family so that only one entry appears in the font menu. When you choose italics or bold, the correct printer font will be used to print. The only thing you lose by doing this is that you won't be able to double bold things. For example, like Garamond Bold, and then bolding THAT. Otherwise, everything works great. Mark Rosen marosen@elbereth.rutgers.edu

If you have Font Harmony that came with Suitcase II, you can "merge" the font family so that only one entry appears in the font menu. Applying the styles like italics or bold will still use the correct printer font. The only thing you won't be able to do is double bold something, like choosing Garamond Bold, and then bolding THAT. Otherwise, everything else works beautifully. Personally I don't generally bold a bold anyway. Mark Rosen marosen@elbereth.rutgers.edu

Of course, this only works completely with font families that have only two weights. If you have more complicated families, with "light", "book", "semi-bold", "bold" and "ultra" versions, for example, Font Harmony is unable to merge the whole thing together (because the standard Mac style variations aren't enough to describe the family). Type Reunion is pretty inexpensive "on the street" and well worth it if you have a lot of fancy fonts for designing with. -- Jim Elliott "Like a bridge he'll come between us, not a wall" elliott@veronica.cs.wisc.edu

Just as a side note to the whole issue...Adobe Type Reunion and
FullWrite Professional do not get along very well. I use both and it
annoys me the way that Type Reunion disables the menus in FullWrite's
dialog boxes.
