I have been experimenting with the TrueType fonts from apple.com and mac/archive/umich.edu, on both a Mac II and a Mac SE/30, each running System 6.0.5. I keep the fonts in a separate suitcase accessed by the Suitcase DA; this makes it fairly easy to switch between TrueType and bitmapped fonts for experimentation. In general these fonts work OK, but I have observed the following: 1. MacMoney displays reports on the screen using Times (10 pt) for numbers. With bitmapped fonts these numbers are clear and acceptable. With TrueType they are fat, ugly, and poorly spaced to the point of being difficult to read. The column totals, which should be bold, are no longer bold and are even harder to read. 2. In MS Word 4.0 I often use Times 12 pt. Normal copy is fine with TrueType (though updating is somewhat slower). However, the tiny copy used for Print Preview is much worse than before, and even seems to have character positions interchanged on the horizontal line. 3. Attempts to print the apple.com fonts at assorted non-standard sizes from MS Word on a LaserWriter work fine, but the umich fonts produce a PostScript error. The error message is "VMerror (Offending Command: 10)". Has anyone else encountered these problems? Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. More problems with TrueType fonts:
*NONE* of the TrueType fonts available from the anonymous ftp archive at
mac.archive.umich.edu seem to work properly. Specifically, when printing
on a Personal LaserWriter LS from MS Word 4.0, the line breaking "breaks,"
and causes lines to be broken at a length of about an inch and a half
(rather than the actual margin-determined length of 6"). This occurs at
any point size that I've tried.
Apple's TrueType versions of Times and Helvetica don't exhibit this
behavior, so I assume it's a flaw in the Type1 --> TrueType conversion
of these publicly distributable fonts. Someone mentioned that FontMonger
version 1.0 had problems; perhaps this is an exhibition of further bugs
in that program (many of these fonts were converted by Dave Platt, using
FontMonger 1.0). I've already sent Mr. Platt mail about the problem.

It looks like Microsoft Word 4.0d (or whatever the latest version is; I know that we're using it, but I don't recall which letter it is) doesn't work properly with TrueType fonts. >Apple's TrueType versions of Times and Helvetica don't exhibit this >behavior, so I assume it's a flaw in the Type1 --> TrueType conversion >of these publicly distributable fonts. Although what I said here isn't true (MacWrite II handles the fonts correctly, so Word obviously has problems), it would appear that there is some fundamental difference between the Apple TrueType fonts and these user-generated fonts. ------- Christopher Tate | "I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black; | It's hard to dance with the Devil at your back! cxt105@psuvm.psu.edu | They cut me down and they thought I'd gone, cxt105@psuvm.bitnet | But I am the Dance and I still go on!"

In-Reply-To: message from CXT105@psuvm.psu.edu I can confirm this TrueType & MS Word problem. When using a TT font in a Word document, I invariably get mixed results when printing to a LaserWriter Plus. The screen shows: Joe Sample 123 Elm St. Anytown, USA 11111 But when the letter is printed, there's a line break between the first and last name: Joe Sample 123 Elm St. Anytown, USA 11111 Frustrating.
