[comp.sys.mac.misc] re the 100 lines postings..

dauter@terminator.cc.umich.edu (Michael Dautermann) (04/24/91)

Hmmm.. I have literally no idea what's cracking up over here...

In the last article/posting which you probably just went
by, I listed 100 more lines of new files which can be found
on 141.211.168.70 (mac.archive.umich.edu). The format is just
like the last article I posted.... UT/HIERLNCH is the
um-mts.cc.umich.edu pc2 filename.. the second filename is a
path to the file on mac.archive...

Sorry about the wierded out posts I've put on the net lately
(I got about 20 letters about an article that appeared about
a dozen times.. although I have no idea exactly what went
wrong...)

Other than the technical glitches, do you like the idea of
announcing new files on the archive here on comp.sys.mac.misc?

Send comments my direction.. I'm eager to listen in.. thanks..

Michael...

No, I'm getting tired of them really fast. Better to just have an index
file that people can FTP, and not bother the rest of us.

I don't really mind them, though it is mildly annoying having to sort them
out from all of the other messages in the group. Perhaps they could be posted
to .digest, like the info-mac and tidbits postings are. That might be a bit
more appropriate, given that they seem to be coming out on a regular basis.
Updates like this are a lot easier than having to snarf some huge index by FTP
every time you want to check to see if there are new files.

If you really don't like them, you could put them in your kill file.

I don't mind these postings, but a real index file would be much more useful
to me.

I was questioning their usefulnes, given that someone in a position to FTP a
file could just as easily FTP an index first. There are a number of FTP sites
archiving various things on intest to various people. If everyone was to post
a blow-by-blow listing of what was being added to their archives, there'd be
room for little else on the net. Additionally, each article costs each site
some amount of money, even if they have no intest in the index. Let those
who are interested pay for the FTP access to an index at the archive site.

You mean like the regular, large postings about Simtel 20 on
comp.binaries.ibm.pc? The very good reason for posting a list of recent
additions to the Michigan site is that there is no new files listing. Also,
given the relatively large number of files (and directories), such a listing
does a service to those who use what has become one of the two most active mac
ftp sites in the country.

Great idea. And we'll do the rest of the net the same way.
Starting with you: you send me a list of newsgroups you're interested in, and
I'll bill you for the ones I find boring or useless.

I for one offer a voice of support for the umich archive. On several
occasions I have found the listing valuable. Compared with all of the crap in
the alt.* groups, IMHO, I think the net can afford to have a monthly listing of
new files available from mac.archive.
