Forwarded by Andrew Knox (macftp@ccu1.aukuni.ac.nz.). Mike Gleason has been having problems with posting news articles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here's volume 1, #4 (April 1991) of the mac.ftp.list. I've been having problems with news lately, and I'm not totally sure my posts have been showing up globally even though I specified 'world.' So, here's my third attempt at posting this same list... Sorry I'm late. I decided to write a program to compile this list, instead of using a text editor to constantly revise the numbering of the footnotes and such. There will probably be new screw ups since I basically had to re-enter everything, so keep an eye open for glitches. Also, someone suggested that I keep a copy available by ftp. Tentatively, you can get this list from ftp by calling my home site, fergvax.unl.edu. I guarantee this will change in the future, though. I plan on posting revised editions as needed to comp.sys.mac.announce about every month or so. I'll probably post the list the first of the month along with the two other monthly posts, Frequently Asked Questions and About Macintosh Newsgroups. Please send newly discovered sites (with IP numbers and directories to check if possible), bug fixes, and comments to: 231b3679@fergvax.unl.edu (Mike Gleason) NOTE: My account expires around May 10. For folks new to ftp ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first column of stuff in the data below is the site name. Usually you can just run ftp and type open and then the site name. But some computers don't like the names (or don't have all of them) and prefer the next column of stuff, the IP addresses. If you try the open command with the IP number and it doesn't bite, it isn't gonna work. Most mac ftp sites have encoded their files with BinHex 4.0. These files will end in the suffix '.hqx'. To decode these files, you can just download them to your mac, and use Compact Pro or Stuffit to decode them. THEN, you will need to decompress them. Files ending in '.cpt' are Compact Pro files, '.sit' files are Stuffit's. You will probably need both Compact Pro and Stuffit since both types are common. When it prompts you for a username and password, send "anonymous" as the username, and your email address as the password, for me it would be 231b3679@fergvax.unl.edu. Here's a sample ftp session: % ftp ftp> open sumex-aim.stanford.edu Connected to sumex-aim.stanford.edu. 220 sumex-aim FTP server (SunOS 4.0/3) ready. Name (sumex-aim.stanford.edu:231b3679): anonymous Password (sumex-aim.stanford.edu:anonymous): 231b3679@fergvax.unl.edu 331 Guest login ok, send mail address (user@host) as password. 230 Guest connection 17 (of 25) accepted, access restrictions apply. ftp> cd info-mac ftp> get ./help/recent-files.txt recentFiles ftp> get ./game/cumulonimbus-110.hqx cn.hqx ftp> quit % sz cn.hqx Power User Notes: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most files you'll get off ftp are in that pain in the butt format, binhex. I usually download to our unix box, and then use an immensely useful utility called "mcvert" to de-binhex them there. Not only is this faster, but it doesn't tie up your own CPU :-) Stop over to sumex and grab it. After mcvert'ing files, they'll turn into files with ".bin" suffix on them, meaning they are in MacBinary format, and ready to download. If you think you know what you are doing, you could also unstuff the files on your unix box and download the unstuffed files from there, but then you'd need "unsit" and "macbin", also available from sumex. Here's a handy chart to keep track which archivers unmangle which formats: .sit .sit unix .cpt 1.5 dlx .hqx .zip .dd .lzh .Z .pit .arc .bin Compact Pro X X X Stuffit 1.5.1 X X X Stuffit Classic X X X Stuffit Deluxe X X X X X X X Disk Doubler X X X DDExpand X X X Packit X MacCompress X MacLHarc X ArcMac X BinHex 4.0 X BinHex 5.0 X UnZip X Opinion: If you distribute files to others, keep in mind these guidlines: a. Everyone I know loathes Stuffit formats that are not 1.5.1 compatible. (i.e. Stuffit Classic's and Deluxe's Molasses mode, er, "Best" mode) b. Don't use Self-Extracting Archives (.sea's). They make file sizes larger, and make it easier for virus transmission, since they have to be applications. c. Stuffit 1.5.1's format can be read on many machines besides Macs, like MS-DOS, Unix, and Amiga. d. Stuffit 1.5.1's format can be read by many other archivers besides Stuffit. e. Stuffit 1.5.1 format and Compact Pro format archives are accepted by almost all FTP site maintainers. These sites have many mac files, and are still getting new ones: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ccu1.aukuni.ac.nz 130.216.1.5 /mac (1) irisa.irisa.fr 131.254.2.3 /News/comp.binaries.mac (2) ix1.cc.utexas.edu 128.83.1.21 /microlib/mac (3) mac.archive.umich.edu 141.211.168.70 /archive/mac (4) nic.funet.fi 128.214.6.100 /pub/mac (5) rascal.ics.utexas.edu 128.83.138.20 /mac (6) sumex-aim.stanford.edu 36.44.0.6 /info-mac (7) These sites have a lot of files, but do not get much new: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- apple.com 130.43.2.2 /pub/dts (8) f.ms.uky.edu 128.163.128.6 /pub/mac [sumex] giza.cis.ohio-state.edu 128.146.8.61 /pub/mac, /pub/oztex mars.ee.msstate.edu 130.18.64.3 /files (9) mcsun.eu.net 192.16.202.1 /comp/mac plains.nodak.edu 134.129.111.64 /pub/mac/pub (10) ux1.cso.uiuc.edu 128.174.5.59 /mac/MUG, /ftp.list (11) vega.hut.fi 130.233.200.42 /pub/mac wsmr-simtel20.army.mil 26.2.0.74 PD3:<macintosh> ? They'll probably shadow Sumex-aim and other sites, so folks from New Zealand and Australia won't have to call halfway across the planet. ALL FILES: /mac/FILE.LIST HELP: Mail Andrew Knox at macftp@ccu1.aukuni.ac.nz. HOW TO UPLOAD: macftp@ccu1.aukuni.ac.nz TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 2. irisa.irisa.fr (131.254.2.3) They keep archives of the postings to the comp.binaries.mac newsgroup. The files all stored in one huge directory, so instead of doing an 'ls', get the index file to look at offline. ALL FILES: /News/comp.binaries.mac/index HOW TO UPLOAD: Post to the comp.binaries.mac USENET group. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 3. ix1.cc.utexas.edu (128.83.1.21) Not a large site, but it gets a unique file once in awhile. ALL FILES: /microlib/mac/file-list.txt RECENT FILES: Get the file called "Update-[date]" in /microlib/mac. HOW TO UPLOAD: email binhex files to chrisj@emx.utexas.edu TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 4. mac.archive.umich.edu (141.211.168.70) This site along with Sumex-aim and Rascal, make up the Big 3, which get most of the new files. Mac.archive shadows Sumex, and holds its own with an unbelievable number of Outline fonts (mostly Postscript, but I hope that the trend will continue with TrueType fonts!) and other unique uploads. This site is still under construction, in the process of moving from ub-mts.cc.umich.edu. The new site is UNIX based this time. Hopefully Mike Dautermann will add some help files soon, like RECENT lists. HOW TO UPLOAD: ftp-put files in the /archive/mac/incoming directory. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 5. nic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100) A very large European site. In addition to shadowing Sumex-aim, they get their own original files sometimes. Non-Europeans shouldn't call often, to keep costs down. ALL FILES: /pub/mac/_file.lst RECENT FILES: /pub/mac/_file.in HELP: /pub/mac/HELP HOW TO UPLOAD: Use ftp to put files into /pub/mac/incoming. TRANSFER MODE: Use BINARY (IMAGE). 6. rascal.ics.utexas.edu (128.83.138.20) A medium-sized site, often scoops Sumex with unique files. My favorite feature of Rascal is that they store their submissions in MacBinary, so you don't need to de-binhex your downloads. RECENT FILES: look in the /mac/NEW directory. IN QUEUE: /mac/INQUEUE HELP: Plenty of help files (prefixed with 0) in /mac. HOW TO UPLOAD: email .hqx files to macgifts@rascal.ics.utexas.edu TRANSFER MODE: Use BINARY (IMAGE). 7. sumex-aim.stanford.edu (36.44.0.6) The king of macintosh ftp sites. If you want your uploads to get a wide distribution, this is the place to send them to. They also have their own message "list", the info-mac digests. This is handy for those who don't have USENET access. Because of space constraints, they periodically delete old files to make room for new ones. ALL FILES: /info-mac/help/all-files.txt RECENT FILES: /info-mac/help/recent-files.txt IN QUEUE: /info-mac/help/archive-queue.txt HELP: Look in the /info-mac/help directory, read 'em all. HOW TO UPLOAD: email posts or files to info-mac@sumex-aim.stanford.edu TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 8. apple.com (130.43.2.2) Naturally, apple.com is a good place to download stuff like System software disks and Technical Notes. Someday it will be superceded by ftp.apple.com. HELP: Mail mjohnson@apple.com if something is terribly wrong. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 9. mars.ee.msstate.edu (130.18.64.3) The files here are ubiquitous and stale, but I should point out that they also have an Internet multiuser BBS going. It's tough to get on, but you can try to connect directly (telnet), and when it asks for your "login:" type "bbs". TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 10. plains.nodak.edu (134.129.111.64) Kind of stale, but they had some stuff I hadn't seen anywhere else. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 11. ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (128.174.5.59) A local user group has been kind enough to store copies of it's disk collection here. There is a massive amount of material to download. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in quite awhile. Also, 'dir' and 'ls -l' may not work, if that's the case, use plain 'ls.' ALL FILES: /mac/MUG/0Biglist.MUG HELP: /mac/MUG/0README.MUG TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 12. wsmr-simtel20.army.mil (26.2.0.74) Simtel has a great number of files available, but most of them are quite old. I have not been able to connect here for quite awhile, so I can't comment on them in detail yet. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 13. isca.icaen.uiowa.edu (128.255.19.175) The University of Iowa provides some room for the Iowa Student Computing Association, and not only have they given them an ftp site, but also an Internet BBS (see Mars.ee.mssate.edu, above). While it is easy to get on the BBS (login as 'iscabbs'), they don't let non-UI students use the neato Internet Relay Chat. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 14. lth.se (130.235.16.3) This is the newest European sumex shadow. It could supersede sics.se someday. If you want to upload, use ftp to put your files in the /in-coming directory, then send email to Peter.Moller@dna.lth.se with the descriptions. HOW TO UPLOAD: ftp 'put' in the /in-coming directory, see above. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 15. wuarchive.wustl.edu (128.252.135.4) They shadow both Sumex AND Simtel. Good news for people like me who don't like the Simtel's non-unix operating system. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 16. ftp.apple.com (130.43.2.3) Someday this site will be the headquarters for Apple's ftp'able stuff. It is under construction, and they only get to work on it in their spare time, so it could be a long time before this site is ready to go. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 17. imag.imag.fr (129.88.32.1) Not only is this the home of the CABRI (graph, geometry) software, but they are also nice enough to keep the most recent uploads to comp.binaries.mac, in MacBinary format (yay!). TRANSFER MODE: Use BINARY (IMAGE). 18. ftp.acns.nwu.edu (129.105.113.52) The headquarters of John Norstad's excellent anti-virus program, Disinfectant, and his sample code. TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 19. ics.uci.edu (128.195.1.1) This is the home of the Think C mailing list. You'll find a bunch of Think Class Library stuff here, along with general Think C code, interfaces, and updaters. Read all the README files in /mac/think-c for more info (and how to get on the mailing list). TRANSFER MODE: Use ASCII. 20. kfps-roble6-dynamic.stanford.edu ((special)) This is a "dynamic" site, meaning that it's IP number changes often. To get the IP number, you can "finger minakami@neon.stanford.edu", or start at 36.80.0.138, and increment the last number until you connect. They have plenty of GIFs in addition to the Simpsons' stuff. TRANSFER MODE: Use BINARY (IMAGE). /* eof */
