[comp.sys.mac.misc] Long filenames with tar

kellogg@prodigal.psych.rochester.edu (Lars Kellogg-Stedman) (05/14/91)

I've run into a problem transferring files to and from a unix host...I have
several compressed files, which I archive into a tar file, to be
downloaded and processed on my Mac at home.

Unfortunately, some of the filenames in the tar archive are longer than 31
characters. Rather than truncating the names, tar simply refuses to
pull them out of the archive. Is there any way to deal with this problem
on the Macintosh end? While I realize it would be much simpler to take the
files and give them shorter names before transferring them, that would
require that I had not deleted the files after transferring them.

I'd appreciate any ideas. Please e-mail replies - I'll get them faster
that way. Thanks!

Lars
