Alright, where is it!! I want to complain - it's the 13th of May here, and there has been *no* sign of System 7! Just because we are 18 hours (on average) ahead of the States doesn't mean that we have to wait around for them to have their 13th first! That's discrimination, that is! We want System 7, and we want it now!! They haven't set the read access bit yet, but it seems a reasonable place to put it. According to the readme, it will not be uploaded to apple.com. Chris Kidwell ck31+@andrew.cmu.edu

I went to my local dealer this morning, in Ames, IA, and he said that he wouldn't have until the 15th at the earliest and that I should call first. I wish that when they say released on the 13th, that that would include it actually BEING IN THE DEALER'S HANDS on the 13TH!!!!!!!!! +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |Steve Fuller | Iowa | I will choose the path that's clear. + | | State | I will choose freewill. + |xdpq8@ccvax.iastate.edu | University | -- RUSH -- + +------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

I assume they're keeping ftp.apple.com down until low-volume net time wings around. I looked at the dir-files-all file in dts/help at 7 AM this morning EDT, and it listed two directories within dts/mac/system7, 800k.images and fdhd.images. 800k.images had 8 image files loaded. fdhd.images only had one at that point. The permissions were set to prevent anyone from actually getting to them, but they are there. I haven't been able to log on since then, though. CompuServe is saying that Apple is letting them release the software on the 15th. Well I've just got off the phone from Apple Australia's System 7 'hotline' and they said that they're encouraging people to spread it (being sys 7) around freely and as widely as possible for FREE ! But they couldn't tell me where I could get it for free to start off with :-(. Mark Johnson's post explaining the temporary demise of ftp.apple.com is on comp.sys.mac.programmer. In a nutshell: He got it (the disk images) on at approx 3 am yesterday PST. People saw it, they went nuts, and before he could set the protections to allow for transfers, the machine went down. This happened several times, so the site is now down for at least a few more hours so that they can install software and possibly hardware upgrades. He will post to .mac.programmer and comp.sys.mac.announce when the site comes back up. Funny side note: I first heard about ftp.apple.com a few days ago, and when I took a look around I noticed Mark's README file. The quote that stuck in my mind was, "Firm believers in using our own technology, the server is a Mac IIx running A/UX." He went on to say that any IIfx upgrade offers would be "pleasantly [sic] accepted." What ran through my mind (and probably all of yours, too -- hindsight being 20/20) when I saw that was, "Boy -- that machine isn't long for this world." What chance did a mere IIx have with 6 meg file sets against hundreds or *thousands* of determined FTPers? I wonder if it actually started smoking, or if it just quietly expired. :-> -mike ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Michael T. I just called the local "authorized dealer" here in Ithaca, NY, and I can have it today for $20 (no manuals) or wait until next week and get it for $99 (w/ manuals). If I want to bring my own disks and copy it, that I can do for free, but I have to RENT THE TIME ON THE MAC TO DO IT! And the guy guarantees that would cost more than the $20!!!! Why do I feel like I'm being ripped off? I mean I bought my si a whole month ago - I really ought not to feel like I should have gotten a coupon for a free upgrade or something (sarcasm quite intentional). -Tom Stout QALY1@CRNLVAX5 Ithaca, NY

In Europe the official version will be available on the 15 Aug 91. We have to wait again. But there is a Beta version available with some bugs. . Still Waiting P Schuermans.

The international versions of system 7 are in no way different from the american, EXCEPT that it has a few more ADDITIONAL resources (INTL, itl0, itl1 and itl4 get one more; and a new KCHR table) and all the texts are in your language. (This might not be THAT accurate, so please correct me if I'm wrong) So basically there are no betas with localization. You just take the us version, add the resources I mentioned above, get a "international" CDEV and here it goes. (You can grab both from 6.0.5 and later local systems) I did that now 3 times in Germany (b1, b4 and final) and I haven't encountered any problems. Any texts from Finder or system are in english, but I really don't care... The keyboard has german layout, the dates (and even the names of the days) and times appear in proper german notation. (Of course that is neither the official nor the recommended way to get a localized system). So, give up waiting, do a bit of hacking and go ahead... ;-) Have fun. Now. Oliver.

But there is a Beta version available with some |bugs. System 7 is currently being internationalized/localized on a country-by-country basis. In other words, Apple France is busy translating everything into France style, and Apple UK (whatever they're really called) is localizing for the UK. This will take different amounts of time for different countries, unsurprisingly. The first to be done should be the British English version (no big surprise there) on June 15. That includes the time to get a whole pile of upgrade kits ready, and the manuals, and get some form of support (sorry, no clue what form) ready too. Obviously, some versions will take a long time (ie. Farsi or Mandarin Chinese) and therefore won't be available very soon. But most of Europe should have System 7 in August. This is the prediction, anyway. It's unfortunate that many Europeans would love to use a USA version, but it isn't being shipped there. I'd take it up with your country's Apple subsidiary. Maybe they'll do that different next time, if people ask. bill coderre

Thank you Bill, for your reaction. I am going to contact Apple Nederland through my Local Apple Dealer WichPC to request the international ( English version or UK version) when its released on June 15. I have always been using the English version and not the Dutch version. Piet Schuermans.
