[comp.sys.mac.misc] TrueType problem with Word 4 and LC ?READ/NEW

stanger@otago.ac.nz (Nigel Stanger) (05/19/91)

Here's an addendum to the TrueType problem I have encountered. I
have just found that it *does* happen on the SE/30. It doesn't
appear to do it in MacDraw II 1.1 or WriteNow 2.0. This implies
to me that it *may* just be a problem with Word (surprise
surprise, Microsoft strikes again... ;-)

BTW, I read this morning that Microsoft are having trouble
integrating TrueType into Windows 3.1, and Windows 3.1 will be
delayed until about October as a result. Serves them right, ha
ha! Apple strikes back against Microsoft! ;-)

But seriously, does anyone out there know if there is a conflict
of some sort between TrueType and Word?

Yes, there is a confirmed incompatibility between Microsoft Word 4.0 and
TrueType. The problems affects printing on the Personal LaserWriter LS
(and supposedly other QuickDraw printers as well) catastrophically; it
may well be that the problems you are having are related.

Microsoft has released an INIT that is designed to install itself *after*
TrueType is installed, that will correct the problem that Word has with
TrueType until a fixed version of Word is released. I have it, I've tested
it and found that it does indeed fix the problem with printing to an LS,
but DO NOT ASK ME FOR A COPY. I don't have time to act as a mail server.
I'm going to see if Microsoft gives permission to distribute it freely;
if so, I'll upload a copy to the University of Michigan Macintosh archive
for anonymous ftp (that's mac.archive.umich.edu).
