[comp.sys.mac.misc] System 7.0 bundling

basil@thyme.jpl.nasa.gov (Basil Hashem) (05/15/91)

As of what date will Apple start bundling new Macs with System 7? May 13? How
long will it be before systems will be shipping with System 7 pre-installed?

Thanks for the info,

In a System 7 intro meeting I went to they were saying that it wouldn't be
shipped with systems till about September.

My info over here said November. I guess it coincides with new hardware
releases.

I'm sorry I don't have the exact dates either, but starting very soon,
all Macs will come with a coupon for a free Personal Upgrage Kit.

Somewhat later, they will come with System 7 installed.

These dates will vary by country, since not all of the international
versions are ready yet.

According to the May 3, 1991 "Higher Education Reseller Bulletin"
on AppleLink:

        May 13: System 7 Introduction
                   System 7 Coupon Program begins

        ...

September System 7 begins shipping with CPUs (new part numbers)
System 7 coupons no longer ship with CPUs

January 15 Deadline for submitting System 7 coupons to Apple

For users who receive coupons with new CPUs, they send the coupon and a
copy of the Macintosh sales receipt to Apple. They'll get the System
Software, HyperCard Sampler version 2.1, and the Before You
Install/Compatibility Checker disk. Disks will be in high-density media
(1.44 megs). The "How to Install," "What's New," and "Macintosh
Reference" manuals will also be included.

Send flames to someone else ... just reporting what I read. :-)

Sometime in early August all macs will ship with System 7. Starting RSN
all new macs will contain a coupon for a mini-upgrade ktit, which you have to
send in to Apple before January 1992.

Actually, the official word is "60 days after the May 13th introdution." Which
means around July 1st. And that's probably for Domestic (US English)
Macintoshes. International versions of System 7 will join the "Happy Mac"
bandwagon starting in August. (Happy Mac is what we call "pre-installing
System Software on your new Macintosh").

Of course, this is my understanding of things and not necessarily the
"official" Apple word.

That's great for individuals, but not so good for large companies with
purchasing and accounts payable departments that eat invoices and sales
receipts. This is often a problem with software upgrades where it's free
if you bought the software after a certain date. Quite often, I just pay
the upgrade fee rather than try to get a copy of the invoice or receipt.
In this case, we'll probably have to tell people to get the software from
someone else and to buy the manuals if they really want them.

That's a good point, and I hope you'll feed it back to the Apple USA
or System 7 hotline.

As a partial help, please remember that there are network upgrade kits
and 3packs of documentation sets for sale at your dealer.
