While pondering the new Mac system I will eventually get, I was wondering about A/UX, and some questions came to mind. Hopefully someone or a mob of people can answer them! I know A/UX is a UNIX environment for the Mac, but I'm not real familiar with how it works. Does it allow you to run Macintosh- environment programs in a UNIX environment, sort of like running NeXT applications in a UNIX environment? What kind of hartware modifications, if any, are required to run it? What processor type, how much RAM, and how much disk space are required to run a single- user, isolated (ie. no connections to the outside world) workstation? Are there any serious problems with A/UX that people have encountered? And I would GREATLY appreciate any feedback based on personal experience or technical knowledge that anyone can offer!!! THANKS MUCHLY! Christopher Smith St. Olaf College, Northfield MN Internet: smithc@stolaf.edu

I'm running A/UX with 4MB memory, and response has been excellent. >Are there any serious problems with A/UX that people have encountered? I've been really surprised that A/UX is this stable ... it's 2.0 (or, that's what I'm using). Before doing business with Apple, I thought of a Mac as being something graphics artists and kids used; for *real work* you went out and got an IBM/clone. A/UX has really changed my mind. With A/UX, I can do almost anything I can do with my 80386 box at home (and a bit more!). With SoftPC (which I admittedly don't have) I can run DOS, too. I'm seriously considering switching from XENIX to A/UX. Now, if they would just get the hardware down to something a PC owner could afford...:) >And I would GREATLY appreciate any feedback based on personal >experience or technical knowledge that anyone can offer!!! I use A/UIX every day I'm at Apple (about 3 days/week). I've ported lots of code to it (most of it XENIX code). -- Ed Carp N7EKG/6 erc@khijol.UUCP ...uunet!khijol!erc UUWEST Consulting Alameda, CA 415/814-0550 Computers HAVE caused a revolution in how much information we can safely ignore! --robs@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (Rob Schaeffer) -- Absolutely unabashed Gates McFadden groupie! --

It depends on what you want to do, of course. I have 8M of RAM and almost never swap. The software will fit in 80M, but there's not much room left. A/UX will definitely run on a Mac II with a PMMU. I know because my friend's box is just such a setup. mark a. otto --------------- mo6664@sarah.albany.edu

Definitely not on a 68000 box. Yes, A/UX will run on a Mac II with a PMMU installed. It will not run on an LC. The current version, A/UX 2.0.1, will run on a IIsi and up. Note that while A/UX will run on quite a range of hardware(well...), it DOES require that an FPU be present. I've had email with some of the A/UX people at Apple, and there is no way around the FPU requirement(I had wanted to install in on my IIsi, but I need an FPU first. Now, I'm looking at the Mach operating system (I've heard it's due out in late summer). Oh well... "Pope" Q.E.D Michael Kohne mikek@isis.ngs.noaa.gov <- reply here, cs483106 dies in a couple of days
