[comp.sys.mac.misc] Mysterious beeps

km2a+@andrew.cmu.edu (Kenneth E. Mohnkern) (05/29/91)

I've recently started using a Mac IIci (8 meg, 40 meg HD) for some
multimedia production. At random times it "eeps" at me (the system beep).

It's not just a simple annoyance. When it happens during a MacroMind
Director playback, in front of a large audience, the animation sounds
are interrupted for the rest of the animation. So when playing a
Director file, I keep my fingers crossed, hoping the beep doesn't come
up.

The Mac had a lot of odd inits and cdevs installed. I have removed all
but the ones I'm familiar with and have used for years. So I suspect
it's not an init problem. And since I have 8 megs of memory and am using
Unifinder, I don't guess it's a memory problem.

Some of the SIMMS must have come from other machines (probably Nexts or
Suns), and don't have parity. (Right? They have only 8 chips on the simm
instead of 9.) On bootup, I get a dialog box saying the parity circuitry
is not functioning. Would non-parity simms cause random beeps? Are there
any other possible causes? I'll try to get my hands on some normal simms
(to get rid of that stupid dialog at startup). Anything I can do besides
that and keeping my fingers crossed?

Thanks to all who have any ideas.

Random beeps used to be a symptom of NVir virus. You might want to get
yourself a good disinfectant program and check to see if your machine is
infected.

Do you have a clock that is set up to beep on the hour?
