[comp.sys.mac.misc] THE most subtle change in System 7.

mkh6317@zeus.tamu.edu (HOWARD, MATTHEW KENDALL) (05/27/91)

Since no one else is going to mention it, I will.

Did you notice that the little dot that used to be to the far
left, inbetween the thin double lines at the top of the finder
windows is GONE! Now how are we supposed to differentiate between
a MFS and a HFS disk? Huh? ;-).

As the first to announce this most subtle item, I believe Apple
should award me a free 040 upgrade board for my IIci.

I am afraid you are not the first one. I saw this been mentioned already months ago.

You don't. MFS is dead. 400k disks aren't supported anymore...
(Yes, I even tested this out... weird errors result...)

Since you're wrong and I point it out, this means that *you*
have to buy *me* a 040 board. 8-)

I don't believe in flaming. If I appear to be flaming, either (a) it's an
illusion due to the lack of nonverbal cues or (b) my sprinkler system has
suffered a momentary glitch, so just ignore me until it's fixed.

Well, since the "little double lines" have been disqualified as the
"most subtle System 7 change", how about this one:

On my IIfx, if I repeatedly press the shift key without hitting any other
keys (something I do sometimes while I'm thinking), the IIfx will begin
to emit random squeals and whistles. I haven't decided whether I like
this "feature" (because it wakes me up), or hate it (because it breaks my
train of thought).

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I the only shift-key-twiddler around?

Sorry, we had this discussion weeks ago. Where were you??? Since I
was the one that started it then, I guess I should be waiting for
the 040 upgrade... Don't think I'll hold my breath. :-) :-) :-)

Isn't this Easy Access at work? It now has a "use on/off audio feedback"
button. If you press the shift key 5 times you turn on some part of
easy access.

My IICi does the same thing, too!

Yeppers, that little squeal (as has been pointed out) is Easy Access's Sticky
Characters turning itself on... Furthermore, if you hit Shirt-Command-Clear,
you will turn on Menu Keys. Then you can control the mouse with your
number-pad (or whatever it is called). Kinda nice sometimes...

What's the story here? The "late breaking news" on the Compatibility
Checker disk claims that MFS disks can be read, just not modified. I
may need to do it, so I'm curious: what "weird errors" have you seen?

Has anyone else noticed that option-command-9 selects all items in the active

so I figured it must be the new system.

Sorry, Dan, I believe you are referring to the activation of
the sticky keys feature. After you press the shift key five times,
it becomes stuck in place, and another five times, it comes off.
Check for the icon in the upper right.

Intended for differently abled people. Was there in Sys 6.0x,
I believe.

Spending a little time in KeyCaps initiates this "Artoo-Deetoo" behavior, also.
Apparently we are engaging Easy Access by accident. It can be turned off, but
I confess to having trashed the INIT..ahem..Extension.

Hope this restores sanity. John

Well, just yesterday I through a DS DD Disk in and guess what happened?
A dialog poped up asking if I want to format double or single sided.
I hit single sided and got a 400 K disk. So what is all the fuzz about that?
I even could copy things on it...
Maybe that is not a MFS disk, but it is 400 K?

Puzzled,

Oliver.

It's called Easy Access. It's always been there but now it makes sounds
too.

Check your control panels folder.

Check your manual about it.

And, if you are like most Mac users, throw it away as you probably don't need
it.

You are wrong. MFS is supported, but no folders appear (yes, I tried it).
Since you are wrong, and I pointed it out, this means you have to send me
your IIfx. Since I'm such a nice guy, I'll send you my II in return (you
pay postage both ways)

It's caused by Easy Access, an Apple-supplied extension. I'm a
shift-key twiddler myself. It's nice to know others are out
there. Remove Easy Access from your System Folder and you can
twiddle to your heart's content. Ahhhhh....

WRONG - There are two even more subtle changes:

1. You can paste any clipboard picture into the Puzzle, thereby creating your
own puzzle. You can remove the picture by using Clear.

2. You can paste any picture into the Map control panel. This is a one way
street - there is no way to undo it.

HINT - did you notice the color world picture in the scrapbook?

Also, there are a number of changes that most people haven't relized yet -
one of the biggest of which is that you can now paste almost anything into
the scrapbook, including sounds.

As a side note, you can get rid of the Apple by selecting Clear from the Edit
menu, leaving the numbers (you must do this every time you want to solve it,
unfortunately). Also, you can paste an image from the clipboard (probably
has to be a PICT) onto the puzzle. HINT: Pasting a floppy drive icon does
not make for an easy puzzle!

Well, not quite, it only requires a little preperation. You select the
original picture in Map, and then copy, paste it into the scrapbook.

>

Then you select the color world in the scrapbook, and paste it into Map.

HINT2 - to revert, you can now select the B&W world from your scrapbook
