[comp.sys.mac.misc] 32 bit addressing problem

feinberg@acsu.buffalo.edu (john a feinberg) (05/27/91)

I tried to turning 32-bit addressing on, and the machine locked up almost
immediately after the hard drive started spinning. I recall seeing that the
drivers should be 'updated' for system 7.0 - could that be the problem? I'm
using a Mac IIsi & a Liberty 80 meg hard drive.

Also, the icon for the hard drive has turned into a 'document,' and for
the life of me, I can't change it back! Any suggestions?

This happened to me...

I pasted an icon into the Get Info box of my hard drive. Later I spotted
the invisible ICON file in the directory and said in effect "well I don't
like the Icon, I'll remove the file and it will revert to the default".

Wrong. Generic icon. Any further attempt resulted in an error message
like "The command can't be completed because I can't find it.".

Helpful!!!!

I rebuilt the desktop a couple times. No help.

(Many unsuccessful things deleted)

I created a folder. Pasted an Icon into it's Get Info, then using the
same program (DiskTop) that I'd used to delete it, copied the invisible
Icon file that was now inside the folder up to the directory of the disk.

Reboot with desktop rebuild and I could now paste an Icon into the disk.

My conclusions:

Pasting an Icon into an object with no "substance" such as a disk drive or
a folder creates an invisible file named "Icon" with no type or creator
within the object.

For a disk it's in the top level, not the Desktop, for a folder it's
inside the folder.

You cannot delete it to restore the previous mode. ( Why not, Blue Meanies? )

Files and folder have a bit that indicates whether to use the custom icon.
I would guess that volumes have a bit as well. To remove the custom icon
you should just clear it from the Get Info window.
