The solution, for those who need to know, is to type in BINARY after ftp'ing to a site but before logging on. Then, when transferring to the mac, select BINARY and then everything is tickity boo. Thanks to all those who replied, especially Barry Moss from Simon Fraser Univ. who got through first.
