[comp.sys.mac.misc] Zoo Decoder?

jsuker@bonnie.ics.uci.edu (Johnathon Laurence Suker) (06/14/91)

Does anyone out there have a ZOO decoder for the mac? Or a way to convert
ZOO to something I can use like BinHqx??? Or even a PC version that I
can use (last resort).

The ".zoo" format is the archive format used by the usenet
comp.binaries.ibm.pc newsgroup. A simple decoder, "looz212.exe"
by Rahul Dhesi, is included in uuencoded format in one of the
monthly "Starter Kit" postings to c.b.i.p.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that ".zoo" is
currently an MS-DOS-only phenomenon.

I have only seen MS-DOS files in zoo archives but I have UNIX and Macintosh
programs to manipulate the archives. Zoo was promoted as an open format
after the SEA/Katz arc fiasco.

I've used zoo in the UNIX world.

It is prevelently used on the Amiga and there is a version on our
departmental Unix machine.

In Japan, zoo seems to be obsoleted. We use LHa, more compression
ratio. Open format. Freeware.  ... Anyway, I don't use MS-DOS :->

StuffIt Deluxe can treat .zoo files with "Other" menu.

I have seen TWO Shareware programs for the Mac that extract .zoo files..
one was called "MacBooz" and the other was "zoo-something" (I forgot
the whole name) .. in addition, I beleave there is an UnStuffit Delux
Module for un-zoo'ing ZOO files. I was really suprised I couldnt
find ether of the two programs mentioned on ether sumex-aim.stanford.edu
or mac.archive.umich.edu .. the files are about 3 years old, so that may
be the reson.. but considering there are programs to extract .arc. .lzh,
and .zip files, I dont see why .zoo has been given the shaft.. can anyone
dig up those programs and put them on the two FTP sites mentioned?
Thanx.
