[comp.sys.mac.misc] Help, please! INSANE problems with my Mac IIci!

ddl683@sarah.albany.edu (Cinderella Man) (06/19/91)

I hope someone can help me figure this one out, because it's
driving me crazy. About fifteen minutes ago I crashed out of
HyperCard 2.1, rebooted the machine from MacsBug, and upon entering
the Finder, half my folders were missing. (This is System 7, btw.)
None of the missing folders are accessable via the usual alternate
methods (DiskTop, ResEdit, SFOpenDbox, for example). I rebuilt the
Desktop, still no luck. However, the drive statistics still reflect
the disk as it was; i.e., there's as much space left on the drive as
there was before the crash, it hasn't been freed up yet. The software
that does show up runs fine.

Here's the weirdest part of it: if I do a File menu "Find",
for say, ResEdit, which was in my now-missing Utilities folder, it
WILL open the folder, and the Utilities folder will magically appear
on my drive again in the Finder! And the second I close ResEdit's
folder, the Utilities folder will disappear! before my eyes! The same
thing applies to a few other programs -- Microsoft Word, for example.
HyperCard can NOT be found by this method.

I am clueless. How is "Find" discovering, and activating,
files that no other method will? How did they disappear in the first
place? And of course, how can I get them back?! I'm still new enough
to System 7 that its quirks are not second nature yet, and I'm very
hesitant to use any of my old disk recovery tools on my Sys7 HD.

Does ANYONE have an idea what's goin' on? Please help if you can!

				thanks,

						Derek L.

Following up to my own message, here are more weirdnesses:

Tried to drag one of the remaining folders to the Desktop:

"The folder "Graphics" could not be moved, because it could
	not be found."
	   or alternately:
"This operation could not be completed, because an error of
	type -127 occurred."

	---
New folders created will last about two seconds before they
disappear from the hard drive's window. They do NOT disappear
from the Desktop, nor from subfolders.

I am very very VERY worried. I'm glad my networking programs are
still available... so far.
