[comp.sys.mac.misc] Apple HD SC Setup and "Apple_Free?"

ym3y@vax5.cit.cornell.edu (06/14/91)

The other day I was poking around with HD SC setup (is that the right name? its
the setup program on the disk tools disk that comes with the mac) and decided
what the hell, lets look at what the partitions button does. I was surprised to
see an analysis of the partitions existing on my drive (I had made NONE
myself). My LC w/40 mb hard drive turned out to have 16k devoted to a partition
for the mac driver (ok, that makes sense), 40,000k devoted to Macintosh HD
(obviously), and 992k devoted to Apple_Free(!) This "Apple_Free" thing also
appears not to be used, judging from the way its presented graphically, but
that seems open to interpretation. Well, 992k isn't so much, but then again,
I do only have a few Mb free and while getting an extra Mb on my disk wouldn't
forestall an eventual second drive, it wouldn't hurt either.

So my question is, what can I do with these 992k? Can I just expand the
Macintosh HD partition into them or are they actually taboo?

The Apple_Free partition is a way of making physically different drives appear
logically the same. For example the old 5.25 inch HD40s had a litte more
space than the later 3.5 inch HD40s but unless you have fiddled with the
partitioning they will appear the same size because HD setup allocates a spare
partition to fill up the space beyond a standard size.

Alright! So, can we, who don't CARE if our disk is the same number of bytes
as the Jones', grab that last almost-a-meg? I'm poor and I'll swipe every
meg I can get!

Yes. You will have to backup your hard drive frist because it will be
necessary to remove the old partition first and then create a new one
which will be larger by the 992k. I did this on my Mac SE 20meg drive,
increasing it from 20 meg to 21 meg about 1 1/2 years ago and have had no
problems ever.
