[comp.sys.mac.misc] Remote Control Between Macs?

fang@physics.phy.duke.edu (Fang Zhong) (06/14/91)

I have a Mac IIfx at work and a Mac Plus at home. The both
machines have a modem. I want to use the Plus to remotely control
the IIfx to do some number crunching. Is there an available application
that allows me to do this? I checked Versa Term Pro 3.0. It only
allows remote file access via modem. I was told that such a remote
control program exists in PC world. Can someone tell me where I can
find a remote control program for Mac?
	Thanks in advance.

There is a package which was outlined in an ad in one of my Mac
mags of last month. I'm not sure what the name of it is, but I'll look
it up later when I get home and e-mail you the specs.

The ad said that you could control your IIfx at work from your home.
The hardware to turn your machine on remotely was also included. I'm not
sure if any type of protection from incoming calls is implemented in the
package, but only a moron would not add such routines to protect the Mac from
hackers, pirates, etc.

It did look like a nice package, and if I was in the same situation,
I would seriously look into it.

I use Carbon Copy Mac to do this. When run on both platforms, it lets you
view and manipulate the screen of one mac using the keyboard and mouse of
the other. It allows me to call my sister in Toronto and fix up her mac plus
without leaving Washington. There is also a program called Timbuktu Remote
which does the same thing but is $200 for a twin pack, as opposed to $120 for
CCM. (TR does support color, though.)

Two caveats: first, in order to make this workable you're going to need
true high-speed modems; 2400 bps is infeasable. I use a pair of HST's (14400/
450), which has problems because of the asymmetry. A pair of v.32bis (14400/
14400) modems would work better. You can also do this over Appletalk. (CCM
supports both AppleTalk and modem connections; there are different versions
of TR available to do this, so you'll pay double if you need both AT and
modem connections.)

Secondly, both CCM and (I believe) TR are incompatible with System 7. I
called CCM (617/551-1000) and they promised a free upgrade sent automatically
to all registered users, RSN. I'm still waiting...

The product is "Timbuktu" from, I think, Farallon.

I'm not sure but I think there is a version of Timbuktoo which will permit remote control of a Mac via modem.

Just asked one of our Tech Support people and they said that Timbuktu Remote IS System 7 compatible.

I would suggest investigating Timbuktu from Farrallon. You will need two
copies of it (one for each machine) but this will allow you to remotely
control one computer from the other. To be precise, you should look at
Timbuktu Remote since you are using a modem.

Good luck
