[comp.sys.mac.misc] I need a chooser doc for HPLaserJetII

jjz34245@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu (Cub Fan - Zim man) (06/18/91)

Does anyone know where I could get a chooser doc for an HP LaserJetII?
Or is there another way to make it work?

Im not on a network, just one printer cord, and a Mac Plus...

Any ideas or comments would be apreciated,

-Zim

The program that you want is called MacPrint. It allows for non-Mac
HP printers to connect to a Mac via the phone port and print. It also
has support for many of the HP cartridges that you can purchace.

You don't need to be on a network for MacPrint to function,
regardless of the mac you own (although there might be a few hangups
with some of the more anitque macs, ie. pre-MacPlus)

It actually works fairly well, although I would sample all of the
different fonts that the printer knows to see which ones work best. We
have had a few problems with Bookman and some of the other PostScrpit
fonts, and we have the Adobe PostScrpit cartridge installed.

[stuff deleted]

There is another Mac -> LaserJet printing package called JetLink express
from GDT Softworks Inc. JetLink received higher evaluation marks than did
MacPrint from MacUser mag.

I have used both and find JetLink Express to be a little bit better.

Also look into "JetLink Express." I have tested both MacPrint
and JetLink Express and each has their strengths and weaknesses.

Ask yourself this: Will you be using Adobe Type Manager
or will you be wanting to more often use the fonts built
into the printer or in a cartridge?

If you want to use HP or cartridge fonts, go with MacPrint.
It handles those fonts better.

However, if you use ATM a lot and want to print to the
LaserJet with Adobe Type 1 fonts, get JetLink Express.
MacPrint often has problems with ATM and will produce
flawed output whereas JetLink Express will do a beautiful
job of converting Type 1 fonts into HP output.

JetLink Express is also much easier to install and use,
and I find its documentation to be slightly superior.
