[comp.sys.mac.wanted] MaxAppleZoom 1.1 doesn't like my Apple Video Card

ostroff@oswego.Oswego.EDU (Boyd Ostroff) (05/08/90)

I have a new Mac IIcx with an Apple "Macintosh II High-Resolution Display
Video Card" (part no MO322) expanded to the full 8 bits and an Apple
Monochrome Monitor.

After reading the docs, I thought the "MaxAppleZoom" would be a great thing
to use, but it refuses to work on my machine. I have it in my system folder
and it's the first init/cdev loaded, but it has an "X" through it and
proclaims "Sorry, MaxAppleZoom 1.1 won't run on this Macintosh system".

Is there a newer version (I've got 1.1) or is it just incompatible with
my system for some reason? I have read the docs and noticed that he
says it might refuse to run with a new revision of the display card
since it does lots of validating of the hardware before installing itself.

Would also be interested in hearing comments from people who use use this.
It sounds like one of those "too good to be true" ideas - does it
really work reliably?

Boyd -

You want to be reading netnews.comp.sys.mac.programmer or .misc (I
think.) to find more detailed info about this. The upshot of the whole
thing is that MaxAppleZoom only works with the old "Toby" cards. It
won't work with the newer Apple cards.

there is a newer version (1.2) available from sumex (info-mac/init/max*).
as the docs say, it may be incompatible with newer macs not using the
"Toby Frame Buffer Card".

it apparently works fine. i used it for awhile (2 wks) on my macII and
none of my applications complained. i stopped using it because i was
concerned about the larger display using more power in my apple color
monitor which doesn't have a fan to begin with. if someone can
convincingly show me that this isn't a real concern i'll continue
using it (and pay the shareware fee!).
