[comp.sys.mac.wanted] Wanted: going rate for used Mac+

nxh@meaddata.com (Nobuya "Higgy" Higashiyama) (10/22/90)

A friend has a Mac Plus she wants to sell, but has no idea how much to ask for.
It's about two years old, and she paid about $1,500 for it. Not sure how much
memory it has (it has only standard equipment). I would appreciate your
opinions on how much this Mac is worth on a used market. Please email. Thank
you!

Thanks for all the responses I've received. Since a couple people mentioned
that they're also looking into selling their Mac Plus's, I thought I'd post a
summary of responses. My thanks to the following people:

	"Mark Interrante" <mfi@serc.cis.ufl.edu>
	"Paul Pazandak" <pazandak@cs.umn.edu>
	deichman@cod.nosc.mil (Shane D. Deichman)

Suggestions ranged from $300 to $1000, but I think the overriding factor is
(as one emailer noted) the recent introduction of Mac Classic at $750 with
educational discount price. Seems like $500 would be a pretty good price.
I've attached excerpts of emails I've received. Thanks again!

You can buy them new at many universities for ~500.

You may be able to get 700 in a town that is not heavily into macs
(ie. not a major university town).
===============================================================================
As an ex-Apple Technical Coord. / Mac-Lover/ and all around good guy I
can tell you that she should be lucky to get $850 for it. It really
depends on several things:

1) Her conscience - she could probably sell it to someone for $1100 -
   but will she be able to sleep well? This is with the understanding
   that the buyer is VERY new to the market & perhaps stupid to boot.

2) Realize that the Mac Classic which comes with a HD drive sells now
   for less than $1000 NEW.

3) Supply and demand in the area.

4) Is the machine worn out / was it taken care of ?

5) Is it dirty - if so, clean it up.

6) Adding software can help but don't add a lot to the cost - people see
   that it's a MacPlus more than what S/W comes with it. It might be
   more of an incentive to buy, than an increase in price that she'll
   gain.

7) A FAIR price would be in the range of $750 IF it has been taken care
   of - but many people don't want fair as much as they want $ (see 1).

Hope this helps!!!

With the intro of the Mac Classic, new
Mac+s are going for around $700 on the
gray market, and could go lower.

If you are giving software with
the system, maybe you could get six
or seven hundred for it....

I'd suggest asking $750 for it w/
software -- advertise the fact that
it's at half price!
===============================================================================
I have one of the beasts myself and when I sell it, I don't expect more than
$500 for it.
===============================================================================
A standard Mac+ has 1 Meg of memory.

Useful information:

The line was discontinued October 15, when the Mac Classic was
introduced. The Classic is a very similar, but slightly (25%) faster
machine, and uses the 1.44 Meg floppy rather than the 800K floppy of
the Mac+. Other differences are minor. It lists for $999, but is
available for as little as $750 (educational discount price).

Some stores have been reported as selling off the Mac+ for $499. Your
friend may be able to get $500 for it, particularly if she throws in a
lot of software. A price of $400 might still attract a lot of interest.
===============================================================================
Used, the max you'll get out of it would probably be around $650. Since
that's what they were liquidating them at last month, I'd think around
$550...
===============================================================================
its worth about $300-400 in clean condition.
===============================================================================
  I soon will be selling my Mac Plus, and I have pondered on this topic. Since
the average Joe on the street used to have to pay around $1250, and this is a
used Mac +, your price should be lower. Things like programs and other specialsmight be alble to bring up the price, but I would post $1000 obo for the price
and shoot for nothing lower then $800 or so.
===============================================================================
  Probably about $600 for the +. New ones are $800ish.
