QuickGIF is a shareware version of QuickGIF Plus. When you pay the shareware fee ($35) the company sends you the enhanced version (QuickGIF Plus). I think this is how it works, but I could be wrong since I orderd mine directly when I saw it mentioned in the "New Products" section in the back of MacUser just before school started. The version I have is 1.1. The shareware version can be obtained at the sumex-aim.stanford.edu anonymous ftp site in /info-mac/art/gif/quick-gif.hqx. QuickGIF is a color only program that can read GIF's and PICT's, and play sounds. In decoding/displaying a GIF file, it is SEVERAL times faster than the GIF viewer programs that I have tried: Giffer, VisionLab, and Adobe Photoshop. For editing pictures I use Adobe Photoshop. QuickGIF has the simple editing capabilities for fliping, rotating, dithering, mirroring, and cliping. It also has has three interesting transformations/mutations that it can do to a picture, they are called Spheric, Conic, and Oil Paint. I seem to recall that the shareware version has the transform menu disabled, or some of the options are disabled. Sorry I can't remember the specific features that are enabled/disabled in the shareware version. The commercial version adds a bunch of subtle improvements in how it works that realy make it easy to use. I say they are subtle because I can't remember the differences now, but I do remember that with upgradeing to the commercial version it became a much better program. Disclaimer: I have no relation to the company/author of QuickGIF other than as a satisfied customer. -- - Tim Mattox - (email: tmattox@ecn.purdue.edu) (talk: tmattox@en.ecn.purdue.edu)
