[comp.sys.mac.wanted] Mail-Servers for Macintosh Software????

atariman@bsu-cs.bsu.edu (Jeff Scott) (11/05/90)

Could someone post or E-Mail me info about any Mac software that is available
by mail (i.e. non-FTP). Our Machine here is not set-up to allow FTP access...

I would really appreciate this info. I would be happy to post to the net any
responses that I get.

I run a mail server here in Finland for Mac PD programs. The following
is the help file of using it. It is still on experimental level but
should work.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

	      x xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x
	      x Welcome to funic.funet.fi (Finland) x
	      x xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx x

**************************
1. MAIL SERVER INFORMATION
**************************

	funic-request PD archive mail server

This is the help file for the mail server located on funic.funet.fi
This file can be requested by sending a null message or 'send help'
command to hv@funic.funet.fi with a subject line of 'funic-request'.
If that subject is not used, the request will not be handled properly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
* TO REPEAT: The Subject-line of the message MUST say 'funic-request'!!	*
* If it does not, I will get the mail and I will send you this file the	*
* first time, and delete your mail if it happens again. *
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

To contact a human, make sure that 'funic-request' is NOT in
your Subject-line.

The server recognizes six commands. They are:

path <path to your machine>
If you want to use a different mail address to
return the requests you must specify it
		using this command.
You should contact your system administrator
to get the optimized path especially if you
are using UUCP or BANG paths to get your
mail delivered to us. Our mail server checks
the mail queue every 15 minutes so if you
don't get response in a reasonable time
you'd better check this one out with a
		little help from your friends.
You can use this command with or without the
		corner characters.

send help sends you this message.

send index	sends you a list of available files with descriptions

send file
this sends the file 'file' from the index.
Remember to use filepath name if you are requesting
a file from a subdirectory. That is if you want a
file called docter235.sit from appl directory you must
		use request 'send appl/docter235.zip'

The format for the file name when using ANONYMOUS FTP is e.g.
		   pub/mac/appl/docter235.sit
This FTP format is used in most of our news announcements.

IMPORTANT!!! The format for the MAIL SERVER is shorter:
		   appl/docter235.sit
In other words omit pub/mac/ from the path when
		using our mail server.

quit As a general rule, it is advisable to exclude your
signature from your request to the mail-server or
use this 'quit' command. 'quit' is useful if you
have something in your .signature that might
be interpreted as a server command.

So if you wanted to retrieve '_files.in' from funic.funet.fi you
could send mail with 'funic-request' as the subject-line with the body of
the message being the text 'send _files.in'.

For example:

	% mail hv@funic.funet.fi
	Subject: funic-request

	send _files.in
	^D
	%

How to extract :
-----------------
The files are sent using 'mailsplit' and the files you get
contain a 'joinr' script in the beginning of the first part.

To get the binary files you can use that script so that you
save all the parts on the same file or into the same
directory as separate files and then remove the mail headers
from the beginning of the first part. Then if you are
running Unix you should be able to run the file by 'sh' that
excecutes the 'joinr' script and when the dust has gone away
you should have the binary file in the same directory where you
executed the script. For a moment this can mean that you get
a subdirectory although you didn't want it to come but I try
to work with this one so that the problem goes away.

---------
This server is based on the KISS package provided by Bill Wells
(bill@twwells.com) and Jon Granrose (odin@pilot.njin.net).
Many thanks for a fine package.

I have included the MailSplit utilization to this package.
I like to thank M F Wyle and H. Yamanaka for the wonderful
program. It gave this server ability to deliver also binary
files.

2. FTP and GENERAL INFORMATION
************************************

Files you find here are usually Stuffit-files (MacBinary files)
(file types .sit, .bin, .cpt and .sea are MacBinary, .zoo files
are normal binary and .shar files Unix shell archived files).

You need StuffIt to unpack .sit files and Compactor to unpack .cpt
files. Or use Extractor to unpack both. All these can be found in
mac/arcers dir. .sea files are Self-Extracting-Archives that is you
can run them (applications) and they extracts.

MacBinary is sort of concept that Mac OS likes the files to be.
So when these MacBinary files are trasferred as NORMAL BINARY
the resource and data forks are combined together somewhat
dissimilar way as what happens when transferring them as MacBinary.
So when you can't use MacBinary protocol REMEMBER USE BINARY.

But if you can't use MacBinary PROTOCOL when downloading these files
to your Mac you must use a PROGRAM called MacBinary to prepare
the .sit files for Stuffit. But you must use binary transfer in
that case too. You can find MacBinary program here in BinHex
format, too. So when you have downloaded the files as normal
binary you must run them also through this MacBinary program.

Drop me a line if you have difficulties/suggestions concerning
this archive site.

If you want to upload us Mac PD stuff please feel free to use
directory called 'pub/mac/incoming'. You can't actually see this
directory but it is there and you can 'put' into it. After you have
put files there drop me a mail so that I know to fetch them from
there right away. And I can then thank you from your upload.

You can find a short description of files in this directory in
the file called INDEX
