when I was a grad student at columbia in nyc, i had a phone installed in my apartment. this was back in 1980-81, when they would actually carry the phone out to the customer. anyway, i got to talking with the installer about phones and stuff. he left me a few gifts, like some extra 4-wire cord and a long wall cord, and most important of all HERE COMES THE INTERESTING PART a number (3-digits) that you could call (at least in NYC) to get a synthesized announcement of your phone number. unfortunately, i forgot the number ( i think it started with 9 ). If anyone has the number, or any information about it (why is it there, etc.) or about other cute idiosyncracies of the phone network, such as rigbacks, etc, I'm very interested. Please reply via personal mail. zev farkas hou2a!zev btl 201 949 3821

In new Toronto-area exchanges, 41097 gives you a synthesized voice telling you your number. In old exchanges (e.g., 78), 41091 is continuous ringback and 41097 is regular ringback. I don't know where else this may be true, but you can try in your area. This stuff generally doesn't seem to work from Centrexes or PABXs.
