[net.followup] Cordless phone repairmen need FCC licenses

parnass@ihuxf.UUCP (09/28/83)

A recent	submission pertaining to trouble in	a cordless
       telephone suggests:

"..... BUT** don't	fret! a	tune up	on your phone by
the	factory	or someone who knows what the're doing will
	    cure your problem."

Cordless	telephones, CB radios, and marine radios contain
radio transmitters. Their design must	be type	accepted by
       the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

According to the	FCC, service on	these units, as well as
other transmitting equipment (other than ham radio equip-
ment), MUST be performed	by, or under the direct	supervision
of the holder of an FCC	Radiotelephone License 2nd Class or
       higher.

Holders of these	licenses are required to pass FCC tests in
       communications, electronics, and	radio regulations.

In regard to your statement that cordless phone repairmen need FCC
licenses, I was simply trying to help that person solve his problem.
However if you want to be that way, then since cordless phones are
also covered under FCC part 68, A FCC 2nd or 1st class license doesn't
mean diddly squat. Only the factory or it's authorized agent may repair
a phone. If you want to repair phones you need to send a repaired unit
in for FCC Part 68 testing and submit the data to the FCC and get
a FCC number to stick on the bottom of the phone.
Effective untill June 1985 a waiver has been issued
to cordless phone manufacturers allowing them a certain amount of
freedom to skirt around some of FCC part 15. This is why we are able
to pump so much power into the AC line (not antenna) and since an
antenna isn't used it is not strictly considered to be a radio
transmitter. It can generate interference an a label on the phone
says so (as per FCC part 15 subpart J). How would you like to have
to get a radiotelephone operators license to work on your computer?
