I prefer MacDraft 2.1 - It's only $250 or so, and handles layers, libraries, scanner input, snap-to object & more. It's not as powerful as VersaCAD, AutoCAD, etc. but I don't seem to use most of those advanced features, anyway (thought I would, but...). Background: I'm a Mechanical Engineer, with BS and MS in Design. I don't design as often as I used to, but I still design regularly. I've used VersaCAD (evaluated the first version for BCS when it came out). I thought it was great, but I just don't need all that horsepower. -Drew -- Andrew Bennett abennett@mit.edu MIT Room 11-124H abennett%athena@mitvma.bitnet 77 Massachusetts Ave. Phone: (617) 253-7174 Cambridge, MA 02139 <Standard disclaimers apply> --

Ashlar Vellum is the best CAD software I've seen on the Mac. It's patent pending "Drafting Assistant" has to be seen to be appreciated; it provides the most powerful and easy-to-use interface I've seen. It is far better than so-called "professional" workstation-class software from companies like ComputerVision.

for anyone already familiar with MacDraw II i've got to recommend Claris CAD. first of all you might still be able to 'upgrade' from Draw to CAD [i think it was about $300-400; about $750 new] and second, it is almost like a superset of MacDraw commands [except it has all the nice things you'd wish MacDraw had]. very powerful for the price. ..gary
