[comp.sys.mac.wanted] WANTED: Mac SE

craig@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca (Craig Hubley) (03/24/91)

Looking to buy a Mac SE, any configuration but one with a FDHD is preferred.
No internal hard drive required but either 20 or 40 meg is OK and I'll pay
a fair price for them (reflecting their typically heavy wear, convenient size,
and brand name if you know it). Will also pay real money for warranties I
can use (like AppleCare, which is transferable). From a source this week:

>The MacWEEK used price index 3/19/91 shows a 1 meg/20 meg Mac SE (800k floppy)
>at $600 trade-in. The same with FDHD (1.44mb) is $725.

Retail used prices are typically $250-$300 higher, but when reselling used
machines dealers offer guarantees and a warranty, and of course when buying
from a local dealer you get a lot of other intangibles which someone selling
over the net can't provide. So this is worth noting but not too relevant.

I'd pay better than trade-in but I can get them retail with a warranty and
support for $900, so I don't need to hear about your $1500 bare SE... :)
Try to remember that Classics are selling for $700 retail from several
dealers in Greater NY, and be realistic about what your machine is worth.
The prices will only go down so if you want to sell, now is always the time.
A lot depends on the shape yours is in, and the extras...

> Additional RAM is worth about $50/meg (for each meg over 1).

I would pay this for 1mbit SIMMs, but I have lots more 256kbit SIMMs lying
around than I can use. I bought a few extra 256kbit SIMMs for $5 each and
am now regretting it... but I'd value 256kbit memory at $20/meg anyway just
to be polite. Only because I know you can't jam 8 meg of it into your SE...:)

> 2/40s go for about $150 more.

This values a 40 meg drive as worth $100 more than a 20 meg drive...
I've been paying $2/meg for used bare external SCSI drives (half-height)
which is in line with new, warrantied prices on larger drives (760 mb, etc.)
I'm prepared to pay more for the convenience of an installed 40 or 80 mb
drive, if it's a reasonable brand name and has performed reliably. But
keep in mind that internal hard drives recieve very heavy wear and not all
brands are the same.

Any pointers to sources of SEs or quotes on used Mac prices are appreciated,
Thanks,
