Is there a tool for the Mac that gives
a command line interface?

My major need is to be able to copy,
rename, delete and otherwise mung groups
of files.

Therefore, this tool would need a wild
card character capability.

It may be overkill for what you need, but MPW provides a very powerful
command line interface with a powerful scripting language.

There is a program that provides a command line interface for the MAC.  The command
line is similar to Unix command lines.  It provides for ls, cat, cp, etc.  Wildcards are 
supported.  It launches applications with documents and does scripting.
