neil@ms.uky.edu (Neil Greene) (03/17/91)

Anyone that has recently purchased an internal or external hard drive, please
mail me a summary as to which systems are prefered.

I am gettting ready to purchase a 400 and 45 meg drive for our system and
would like information for the best drive for the price, including quality.

I'm sure there are others out there (like me) who appreciate a summary being posted to this group. I **NEED** something bigger than the 20Meg I've got at the moment !

Here are the replies I got concerning hard drives and Hard Drives Internatioal
for the mac.
Thanx to all. I bought a 105 mg Quantum from Club Mac for $389. It arrived
within 3 days of ordering. No problems with the drive yet. I called up their
tech support when installing the drive, and they seemed knowledgeable and
helpful.

I just picked up an external 105MB Quantum Pro from Club Mac
(1-800-CLUBMAC). The price was $409+20 shipping. It's a great price,
but it basically comes with no documentation. This drive has been
discontinued so they are clearing them out. The Quantum mechanism has
a 2-year warranty.

I'm really happy with my GCC UltraDrive S 40meg. Heavy (college) use for over
a year. Very fast, with 1:1 interleave even on my MacPlus. More expensive
than many 40 meggers, but I hope to move it over to a MacII-style machine soon,
and its speed will be appreciated then too.

Regarding Hard Drives International:
If this is the company located in Tempe, Az. I would beware. My roomate recently
used my credit card to order a hard drive from them. He was originally told that
the drive would ship that day and would arrive in three to five days. After 7
days he called the company and asked where his hard drive was. They told him
that they were out of mounting brackets and that the drive had not shipped yet.
He told them to ship it without the mounting bracket. After another couple of
days the drive still had not arrived, so he called them again. This time he was
told that the drive was out of stock and that it would be shipped as soon they
got some more in. He told them that he better have the drive in 3 days or he
was going to cancle the order. It arrived 2 days later. The real kicker of the
whole thing is that my credit card was charged the day he ordered the drive. The
drive has performed flawlessly so far, but the company has lousy business
practices.

have my permission.

I bought a 105M drive from them. The drive case is pretty good. It has
a fan, SCSI id changing wheel, metal case, etc. When they dropped the
price of the 105 by $170 a week after I bought mine, I called them to
see if they would rather refund the difference to m credit card or
give me a RMA to return it under their '30 day worry free money back
guarantee'. I was told I had to talk to a certain person who turned
out never to be there. Her extension rang unanswered until I gave up
in disgust. I understand that APS has a much better reputation. Their
number is 800-233-7550

Hard Drives International:

1.800.477.DISK. For IBM PC compatible drives they had an excellent
reputation. I would assume that they have applied their knowhow to
the Mac market as I am nearly ready to purchase a Quantum 105S for
my Mac from them. They have a 30 day no questions asked return policy and
2 yr standard swapout policy on most drives. They have been around
awhile but use your credit card for leverage.

I don't know about HDI but I do know a couple of people who ordered from
ClubMac, which also has extremely competitive prices and good service. They
bought a couple of 105M Quantums and had one of our Tech folks here check it
out. It's nothing fancy, but he thought that it was solidly built. (Case was
made in Argentina, of all places...) So if it's a matter of a few bucks, you
might want to consider them...

I personally ordered a tape backup from Alliance Peripheral. It's been
great, a solid unit, and APS has a very good net reputation. Their prices may
be a tad higher, though.

Hi,
Their Number is 1-800-733-DISK. To date I have ordered three drives from them
. 1 80 MB quantum and two 320 MB miniscribe and they got to me within a week.
You might want to ask them if they have any specials on as they sometimes get
drives which they don't advertise --- I have had no problems with any of my
drives.

                                                               Roger Smith

This is in reply to your request concerning the number for Hard Drives Internati
nal. (Sorry. I sometimes type ahead of myself). Anyway, the number is
800-776-DISK. I bought an 80Meg drive from them once, but wasn't too happy
with it. After I had it for four months the power supply went, and I had to
return it. They did send me a replacement. Eventually I sold it because the
noise level was deafening. I now have a Jasmine Direct Drive 80, and it's
considerably quieter. You should check out the April issue of MacUser. They
have a whole article on budget hard drives. Might just be the thing for you.

Stay away from Hard Drives International. I had to return two drives to them, and they gave me a nightmare about it. If it weren't for my credit card saving
me by doing a charge-back, I don't know when my situation (which was simply
a pair of crapped-out drives) would have been resolved. I have heard one other
horror story about these people, too.

It may be a few more dollars, but try Allied Peripheral Systems. From what I've
heard and seen (I recently bought from them), they offer the best service
among the discount warehouses.

Oh, APS's number is 1-800-233-7550.

I bought a 80 MB hard disk from them about 1.5 years ago and it is groovy.
They are pleasant and helpful and have a very good price. Phone is
1-800-776-disk.
Also, APS (Alliance Peripherial Systems) is good to deal with.
