Tuition is due, or actually is past due, and I need some money so it looks like I am having to sell my Mac to pay for school. Mac SE 2 800K drives 4MB memory Apple Extended Keyboard $1100.00 The Mac is in perfect working order (like new, seriously) and the only reason I am selling it is I need the money for school (unfortunately its worth more than my car and I need my car to drive to school).

'Net people are just too shrewd and/or smart. They are the types that pay 10-40% less than what the average American pays for stuff like this. If they're not students (and therefore eligible for student discounts or can't afford to pay standard going rate), they're computer professionals and know the in's and out's of the business. They're the type that shops in the Computer Shopper, goes to Computer Swap meets, and assembles Sun Sparcstations from old DEC parts :-). Take my advice: If you're looking for a quick sale, go to the 'Net. If you after the best price you can get, advertise in the local paper, ask around your friends if they know anyone who wants to buy it,or post flyers on street corners. Post to the 'Net if you want (it's apparently free for you), but don't expect a flood of responses if your strategy is the latter... -- Dennis Lou | "But Yossarian, what if everyone thought that way?" dlou@ucsd.edu | "Then I'd be crazy to think any other way!" What a comedian......) You really consider that the SE's expansion slot is worth that much? The fact that the Classic doesn't have an expansion slot speaks to exactly that point. Apple says that 90% of current SE owners don't even use the expansion slot. You also have to look at the economics of buying a used SE and immediately purchasing an expensive upgrade via the expansion slot vs. the cost of just purchasing a more capable machine to begin with. If you're looking for a black and white machine with 68000-level performance, a Classic is the way to go. -- Roger L. Long bytebug@dhw68k.cts.com

I really hate to waste bandwith on discussions of this sort, but I would like to point out that the Mac Classic has a memory expansion slot. This isn't the same as the SE expansion slot, but some bright boys at serveral different companies already make accelerators for that slot and some are planning video cards. And in all reality if you are going to buy a compact mac and want to accelerate it or add video a used SE/30 is a much better platform. Built-in apple-compatible acceleration (they made it) and color quickdraw to boot. The only real difference between the Classic and the SE is the 5% speed loss on the Classic. And if you install just on stupid init (a la Stupid mac tricks) that'll go a away. So in all reality it's probably a fair comparison.... I'd rather have a one year warrenty on my equipment than a expansion slot I might never use) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ These opinions are my own, but where I got them I'll never know... flame at: mgenius@cscwam.umd.edu

jfr@locus.com (Jon Rosen) wrote about the street prices of old MACS: >(pretty sad, huh?)... No, its not sad. Think of it as evolution in action. Everyone was complaining that MAC prices were too high. Finaly Apple did something about it. What kept the prices of MAC's high was that: 1. Apple was the only source. 2. Apple had you hooked on a MAC. There are many other computers on the market, but the people who bought MACs wanted the particular combination that the MAC offered. Apple came to the realization that the people who wanted MACs and were willing to pay two to three times the price of an IBM clone for equivalent processing capability, would no longer make the MAC a "growth" industry. With WINDOWS 3.0, to the computer neophyte, an IBM is equivalent to a MAC II. The P.S. I, with color monitor and a hard disk are a very attractive combination especially if your sum total computer experience is gleaned at the computer department of Sears. So Apple, in order to grow, had to lower their prices. The resultant loss in value of used MACs naturaly came along. Now if only SAAB or Dalmier (Mercedes Benz) would follow Apple's lead. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Geoffrey S.
