HELP!!!! I tried to boot my SE (4MB RAM, 40MB La Cie HD, LOADS of inits) this evening, and was met with the " '?' in a disk" icon. What's up?!? Last night it booted fine; got some new software from the net and added it to the system folder -- still fine, even with multiple restarts. Then, in an act so inane only a physicist could have done it, I turned my machine OFF after the restart "beep" in the midst of rebooting. Does this corrupt your system or what? I can read the HD from a floppy boot, and can even run applications, but it just won't start up! One other thing -- when I try to get it to boot off the HD, I get a happy Mac icon for a couple of seconds, which then changes into the "?" icon.... I've even moved all of the new files into a neutral folder on the desktop so they won't be "in the way." Any comments, flames, ideas, etc. will be welcome. Thanx in advance. -shane

I've had similar troubles with my SE. From my experience, it's usually a bad idea to turn off/reboot the computer while the drive is accessing. A quick solution that may work would be to replace the system file. If that doesn't work, hit it with Norton Utilities, and everything should be fine. Chris Kidwell ck31+@andrew.cmu.edu

Something you will have to do is take and reload your System files to the the hard drive. However, something you might try first is using Silverlining (off of a bootable floppy of course) to reinstall the hard disk driver software. This would only be necessary if you couldn't read the hard drive, but since you can, use your system tools disk set to reload the system useing the custom install option and then the system software for SE. This will get you back to booting from the hard drive. BTW, you did wipeout some of the System when you shut off in the middle of a reboot.
