I would like to get a color system for my SE/30. An 8-bit system is good enough for me, but 24-bit is also acceptable if the price is not significant higher. I am interested in high-resolution 14" monitors such as SONY 1304 or Seiko 1450 (with 1024x768 pixels). If you can provide me any information regarding the following questions I would really appreciate your doing so: (1) What are the choices I have for the interface cards? Where can I buy them? What are the merits for each of them? (2) Can SE/30 support high-resolution color system efficiently? Or is that really card dependent? (3) Any experience of using (whatever) SE/30 color system you would like to share? Thanks a lot for your time. - Felix Wu (wu@cadence.com)

In the 8-bit color card arena, I know that Micron has a very well-regarded card which everyone seems pretty happy with (at least on the net.) It will support either the Seiko or the Apple high-res color monitor. Micron can be bought through MacConnection, and most other mail order stores. In the 24-bit color card arena, you've got RasterOps and SuperMac. (There may be others; I know Radius does not have a 24-bit color card for the SE/30.) I've seen the RasterOps 24-bit color cards for the SE/30 sold in most of the mail order catalogs. Merits: price vs. # of colors you can have on the screen at the same time. The 24-bit cards are now about $150-200 more than the 8-bit cards. >(2) Can SE/30 support high-resolution color system efficiently? Or is that > really card dependent? It seems to have worked well for me. At least on the SE/30, you don't have to go through the 10 MHz NuBus, so reaction time is pretty quick. I have run applications which don't appear to be as efficient in 8-bit color mode, but that appears to be poor refresh design on the applications' part. >(3) Any experience of using (whatever) SE/30 color system you would like to > share? Yup, RasterOps 24-bit card with an Apple 13" High Res monitor for about a month. Works great, no problems. "Nah... you're the mob, *you're* the mob in this room, Vinnie. I believe the Supermac card was discontinued over a year ago.
