[comp.sys.mac.apps] Word 4.0 and floating blocks

cohill@vtserf.cc.vt.edu (Andrew M. Cohill) (06/02/90)

Ditto on those annoying problems with Word. I am hand-numbering figures
in my dissertation proposal right now. If it gets out of hand I will
use the mail merge kludge. Microsoft has really dropped the ball on
that one; in their defense the tables in 4.0 are wonderful. I spent a
couple of years writing professionally with tbl|troff, and I am willing
to suffer through a lot to keep point-and-click tables. Yet those two or
three additional features would give Word an almost unassailable first
place in WP.

My personal pet peeve is the difficulty of preventing figures from being
split across a page. It takes a lot of hand-tuning to keep them in one
piece. If there is a way to prevent this I have not run across it in
TFM. GML/Script in the mainframe world has floating blocks that "float"
to the top of the nearest page; a great feature in an otherwise wretched
WP environment (XEDIT is disgusting).
